Victor Wembanyama said he felt healthier after being sick to start the season, scoring 52 points with 24 rebounds and eight blocks in the San Antonio Spurs’ 112-111 win over the Dallas Mavericks.
The victory extended San Antonio’s winning streak to six games after an 0-2 start.
Wembanyama says he has his legs back
In postgame comments reported by CBS Sports, Wembanyama described an improvement in how he felt physically.
“I haven’t been feeling great lately. I’ve been sick for a while and today I felt like I got my legs back. So it should be more like this, more often.”
His points and rebounds were career highs. He also became the first player with at least 50 points, 20 rebounds, and five blocks in a game since Bob McAdoo in 1974.
The performance was Wembanyama’s third game in his last four with at least 36 points and his fourth game this season with five or more blocks.
Perimeter shooting remains a focus
Despite that production, Wembanyama said his shooting left room for improvement. CBS Sports reported that he has made 24% of his 3-pointers this season and is 11 of 36 from mid-range.
“I can still do more. I mean, my shots weren’t falling tonight and that forces me into a style of play that is exhausting. I can do it. I mean, the proof is here. I can do it, but I can be much better if my shots fall. I know it’s just a matter of time.”
