Best Bet: U56.5 (-112) at DraftKings

The Pick: SMU 31, Virginia Tech 24
We’ll take the Under based on Virginia Tech’s conference road data along with SMU’s recent betting results.
Game Betting Analysis
this is a difficult one to nail down, but there’s is slightly more conviction in the Under based on the betting data given. SMU enters with a surprising 3-5 O/U record on the season, hitting the Under in a stealthy four of five games. Virginia Tech has also hit the Under in its last seven conference road games. Virginia Tech’s 5-3 O/U record this season makes this pick murky, however, but the ATS market isn’t much better. The Hokies are 5-3 ATS this season compared to SMU’s 3-4-1 mark, but Virginia Tech has dropped the spread in four straight games during this month. Also, SMU just lost a terrible game to Syracuse – so conviction backing them right now isn’t high. We’ll cower in the total market and succumb to the Under.

Deciding Factor: Kevin Jennings’ Turnover-Free Surge at Home vs. Virginia Tech’s Still-Searching Run Game
SMU enters Friday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium as 5.5-to-6-point favorites over Virginia Tech, and the number is built almost entirely around what Kevin Jennings has become since his rocky start. The fifth-year senior threw all five of his interceptions in SMU’s first four games this season, but over his last four he’s thrown nine touchdowns and zero picks, and he’s been a different quarterback at home than on the road — 15 touchdowns against just one interception in five games at Ford Stadium, compared to six touchdowns and four interceptions in three true road games. He’s top-10 nationally in both passing yards (2,414) and touchdowns (21), and he’s got the weapons to spread the damage around, with seven different Mustangs pulling in 14-plus receptions. Add in Kendrick Raphael (692 rushing yards, 9 touchdowns) keeping defenses honest and defensive end Marques White leading the team with 5.5 sacks off the edge, and SMU has the look of a team peaking at the right time in front of its own crowd, in exactly the kind of spot where Jennings has been nearly unbeatable all season.
The Hokies, meanwhile, are riding momentum of their own but carry a real structural problem into this one. First-year coach James Franklin — hired away from Penn State just a year after his own firing there — just delivered maybe the signature win of his early Virginia Tech tenure, a 20-16 upset at Clemson sealed by Ethan Grunkemeyer’s touchdown pass to Luke Reynolds with 1:44 left, but that win came with the same issue that’s dogged this offense all year: Tech has never established a consistent run game, rotating Jeff Overton and Marcellous Hawkins without either forcing much respect from defenses. Two veteran offensive linemen are expected back after missing time, but they’re stepping into a daunting matchup — Franklin himself has flagged SMU’s size and athleticism up front, including two 300-pounders anchoring the interior of a run defense that, even ranked just 42nd nationally, is still holding opponents to 3.8 yards per carry. If Virginia Tech can’t get Overton or Hawkins going early against that front, Grunkemeyer and Reynolds will be asked to author another last-minute script on the road, and against a Jennings playing the cleanest, most complete football of his career in front of his home fans, that’s a much harder trick to pull twice in a row.
