Best Bet: U43.5 (-115) at DraftKings
Score Prediction: Iowa 23, Northwestern 20
The Pick: Iowa 23, Northwestern 20
We’ll go with the Under based on Iowa’s 2026 betting data and the head-to-head stats for when Northwestern is hosting.
Game Betting Analysis
The Under seems to be the safest play when looking through the data, hitting in six of eight games for the Hawkeyes this season. Northwestern, despite a 4-2-2 O/U record this season, has also seen the Under hit in its last four home games when facing Iowa. This meeting has seen the losing team scoring 14 points or less in the last four head-to-heads, so for us, there is enough there to support the Under. What about the spread? Iowa has covered the spread in seven of eight conference road games, but the home team has covered the spread in four straight meetings. Both teams also enter with a 5-3 ATS mark this season, so we’ll just stick to the total for this one.

Deciding Factor: Iowa’s Nation-Leading Rush Defense vs. Northwestern’s Turnover-Hungry, Dual-Threat Attack
No. 21 Iowa (6-2) comes into Evanston off one of the most dominant defensive performances of its season, a 30-0 shutout of Wisconsin on Oct. 31 in which Hank Brown’s 222 yards and two touchdowns through the air were almost beside the point — the real story was a defense that has quietly built into one of the best units in the country. The Hawkeyes rank 12th nationally in total defense (275.5 yards allowed per game), are a staggering 4th nationally against the run, and sit 14th in third-down defense, holding opponents to a 31% conversion rate. That identity has carried Iowa through a brutal stretch: a 20-19 road win at Michigan, a 41-24 win at Washington, and losses to Ohio State (31-14) and Minnesota (13-10) that came against an offense averaging just 28.3 points per game (70th nationally) and 383.6 total yards (69th). Iowa simply doesn’t have to outscore anyone — it needs its front seven to do to Northwestern’s ground game what it did to Wisconsin’s, and keep this inside the kind of low-possession, field-position game the Hawkeyes have proven they can win even with middling offensive production.
Northwestern, meanwhile, brings the two things most likely to break that formula: a dual-threat quarterback and a knack for taking the ball away. Aidan Chiles has thrown for 1,898 yards with 13 touchdowns against just one interception (68.8% completion), and he’s shown he can hurt a quality defense with his legs — in a 34-26 loss to Oregon on Oct. 31, Chiles passed for 281 yards and ran for 93 more with a rushing score. The Wildcats’ defense isn’t flashy by yardage (374.1 total yards allowed, 84th nationally) but it bends without breaking, ranking 25th in scoring defense (18.8 points allowed) — and Northwestern’s +10 turnover margin ranks 5th in the country, dwarfing Iowa’s modest +1 (60th). Wins over Penn State and Michigan State show this group can play physical Big Ten football, and oddsmakers have taken notice: Northwestern opened as a 1.5-point favorite and has moved to -2.5 with the total sitting at 44.5. If Chiles can extend plays against Iowa’s stout front and the Wildcats win the turnover battle the way they have all season, Northwestern has a real path to knocking off a ranked opponent at home.
