The Pick: Knicks 115, 76ers 112

We’ll try the Knicks spread and the Under, based on head-to-head data with the total based off recent Knicks results as well.

Game Betting Analysis

We’ll take the Knicks here with many data pointing to the road team in this specific series. The road team has covered the spread in eight of the last nine games played between the Knicks and the 76ers, while New York has actually won outright in its last eight games inside Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Knicks, despite losing the last meeting, won six in a row against the Sixers prior. The Sixers are a new look, though, so if that betting data worries you at all perhaps try the Under instead. It has hit in three of four meetings while the Knicks have hit the Under in six of seven games.

Knicks-76ers Odds (Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under)

Deciding Factor: 76ers’ Remade Two-Way Depth vs. Knicks’ Thinned-Out Frontcourt

Philadelphia enters Friday 4-1 in the regular season, averaging 110.8 points a game with the NBA’s third-ranked defensive rating (103.5), and the retooled roster has already beaten New York once — 106-100 at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 20, in the season opener for both teams, the night the Knicks raised their championship and NBA Cup banners. In that win, the 76ers got scoring from everywhere: Tyrese Maxey (28 points), Jaylen Brown (19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists in his first game back in New York since being traded from Boston), LeBron James (14 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists) and Joel Embiid (13 points, 11 rebounds) all contributed, and that same balance showed up again in Wednesday’s win over Indiana, when Maxey (27), Embiid (21/11), Brown (20/10) and Anfernee Simons (20 off the bench) combined for the bulk of the scoring. Brown is questionable with left knee soreness after playing all five games so far, but with Embiid and James not even appearing on the injury report, Philadelphia’s rotation is deep enough to absorb it.

The Knicks, meanwhile, are still searching for the form that won them the title, sitting at 2-3 with real questions up front after letting Mitchell Robinson walk to Boston in free agency — Andre Drummond (12 points, 14 rebounds in the Oct. 20 loss) has had to soak up heavy center minutes in his place. Jalen Brunson has carried the scoring load (25.8 points per game) but is shooting just 40.2% from the field through five games, and New York needed 38 points from him just to get past a 1-4 Bulls team on Wednesday. Karl-Anthony Towns has been productive (19 points, 12 rebounds in the Oct. 20 loss, 13 rebounds against Chicago), but he can’t guard Embiid or Philadelphia’s switchable wings by himself. If Brunson’s efficiency doesn’t improve against a top-five defense, the champs are staring down a second straight regular-season loss to this 76ers team; if New York can make Philadelphia’s offense work for every bucket like the Pacers and Bulls did, they have a real path to turning it around.
