Warriors vs. Hawks Matchup Preview
Tonight’s game will be the second game of the season and the last in the season series between the Golden State Warriors (15-9) and the Atlanta Hawks (5-18). On November 13, Golden State took the narrow win at home 110-103 behind Kevin Durant’s 29 points and Klay Thompson’s 24. The Hawks will be looking to stop a streak of eight consecutive losses against Golden State.
Golden State isn’t quite healthy just yet with Draymond Green still out, but the matchup between Stephen Curry and rookie Trae Young should be one to watch. There have been some premature comparisons of Young to Curry, so Young should have another big test in his rookie campaign tonight.
Atlanta’s fast-paced offense, which is responsible for six players averaging double figures in scoring, could play right into the hands of the Warriors.
Golden State Warriors Starting Lineup
Position | Starter |
---|---|
PG | Stephen Curry |
SG | Klay Thompson |
SF | Kevin Durant |
PF | Draymond Green |
C | DeMarcus Cousins |
*Damian Jones suffered what is very likely a season-ending injury against the Pistons. The Warriors have not named a starter at the time of this writing.
Warriors Analysis
While Kevin Durant may be on an absolute tear lately, and Steph Curry may finally be back from injury, the Warriors are struggling on this road trip at 0-2 with losses to Toronto and Detroit. Curry claimed he was a bit “antsy” in his return from injury that kept him out 11 games. He still managed 27 points, but had to shake off some rust in the first half. Durant expects the Warriors to have a better performance against Atlanta after a game of Curry re-acclimating himself and the team becoming more comfortable with him back in the lineup.
Before the loss to Detroit, Durant had three consecutive games where he scored over 44 points per game, including an impressive 51 in the overtime loss to the Raptors.

Atlanta Hawks Starting Lineup
Position | Starter |
---|---|
PG | Trae Young |
SG | Kent Bazemore |
SF | Kevin Huerter |
PF | John Collins |
C | Dewayne Dedmon |
Hawks Analysis
Like the Warriors, the Hawks are also on a two-game skid, losing to the Thunder and the Hornets. John Collins has been a welcome addition to the lineup since returning from injury. He led the Hawks with 19 points and 11 rebounds in their loss to Oklahoma City.
While the Hawks may lead the league in pace, that pace hasn’t exactly been beneficial as they have been unable to break double digits in the win column yet.
Rookie Trae Young has been a bright spot for Atlanta, with averages of 15.6 points and 7.6 assists per game, but Young can be inconsistent at times and has had troubles with physical, athletic guards like Russell Westbrook. Against Westbrook and OKC, Young 4-of-15 from the field and did not make any of his three attempts from beyond the arch.
Taurean Prince provides an interesting matchup for Durant, and we’ll likely see Collins on him as well.
