Golden State Warriors vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview

The Dallas Mavericks (20-22) host the Golden State Warriors (28-14) tonight in hopes of avenging their December 22 loss and getting a 2-1 regular season series lead.

In their most recent matchup, Golden State took the win at Oracle Arena 120-116 behind a 29 point, 12 rebound, eight assist night from Kevin Durant. Wesley Matthews had 25 for Dallas and DeAndre Jordan added 23 rebounds.

In the first game of the season series on November 17, the Mavs limited the Warriors to 109 points and took a three-point win behind rookie Luka Doncic’s 24 points. But lately, the Mavs are giving up a ton of points and the Warriors are more than capable of putting big numbers up on the board.

Both teams are coming in off of winning streaks, but they are at opposite sides of the Western Conference. The Warriors are in second place and a half-game behind the Denver Nuggets for first, while the Mavericks, who looked like playoff team earlier in the season, is now planted firmly in 12th place.

Warriors Analysis

Golden State WarriorsGolden State will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games tonight. After going through injuries and then struggles shortly after that, in their last four games, the Warriors seem to be back on the same page. Any slump Klay Thompson was on appears to officially be over as he has found his stroke in the new year.

In their most recent win, which was the second shellacking of the Chicago Bulls this season, the defense limited every Bull not named Zach Lavine.

On offense, Thompson finished with 30, Stephen Curry had 29 and Kevin Durant had 22 points.

The Warriors had two 40-plus point quarters in the game, a pace the Bulls had no chance of matching.

Mavericks Analysis

Dallas MavericksAbout a month or so ago, I was talking about the Mavericks turning the corner and becoming a contender in the Western Conference, but if the playoffs started today, the Mavs’ season would already be over.

Dallas bounced back from three straight losses to get wins over the Phoenix Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves, but they’re facing a completely different beast tonight.

In two of their most recent losses, it was easy to see that Harrison Barnes’ struggles were an issue. He still struggled against Phoenix, but was able to put up 17 points and had one of his better games recently with 23 points against Minnesota.

Luka Doncic has been nothing short of fantastic and is playing well beyond his 19 years, as Tom Petrini wrote about earlier today. He’s just not getting consistent help from his teammates.

One teammate, Dennis Smith Jr., has struggled with injuries lately and is questionable for tonight’s game. He’s also been mentioned in several trade rumors lately.

DraftKings & FanDuel Fantasy Picks

Stephen Curry ($10.2k) and Luka Doncic ($8.4k) are stud picks for tonight’s matchup. On FanDuel, Curry is projected for 44.58 points, while Doncic is projected for 40.03.

Go with Draymond Green ($7.4k) as a value pick if you’ve got scoring coming from other players on your team and you need several other categories boosted. He’s projected for 32.5 points on FanDuel. Harrison Barnes ($5.7k) should make his fantasy owners happy. Because of his struggles, Barnes’ salary is low, but he has clearly bounced back lately, and he has a projection of 27.99 points tonight.
