Houston Rockets vs. Toronto Raptors Preview

James Harden and the Houston Rockets (27-20) welcome the Toronto Raptors (36-14) into the Toyota Center in what could be one of their last games without Chris Paul, as he is expected to make his return to the court next week.

The Rockets enter tonight’s game having won their last game and splitting their last 10. They are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference. Toronto lost thier last game, but have won eight of their last 10. They’ve been in a battle with Milwaukee all season for the top spot in the East.

This will be the first time these teams meet in this interconference matchup this season. Last March, Toronto eked out a win 108-105 in a game where James Harden scored 40 points. Toronto will likely have to deal with Harden again tonight as he has scored over 48 points in four of his last five games.

Rockets Analysis

Houston RocketsThe James Harden show continues in Houston tonight. Harden, who has put an injury-plagued team on his back, has been on a scoring tear. He’s averaging 45.3 points per game in January. He hasn’t forgotten about the other areas of his game though, as he’s also averaging 8.9 rebounds and 7.9 assists this month.

In their recent win against the Knicks on Wednesday night, Harden put up a career-high 61 points along with 15 rebounds and four assists.

The addition of Keneth Faried has paid off for the Rockets, especially with the loss of Clint Capela to injury. Faried had 11 points and eight rebounds against New York and Eric Gordon seems to have found his shot with a 20-point night on  Wednesday.

While Harden carrying so much of the burden seems worrisome, the good news for Rockets fans is that Chris Paul will be making his return to the court soon. He was upgraded to questionable for tonight.

Raptors Analysis

Toronto RaptorsThe Raptors had been on quite a run, winning eight of nine games, including several games without star forward Kawhi Leonard, but they lost their most recent game against the Indiana Pacers with Leonard and OG Anunoby out along with Jonas Valnciunas.

In the 106-110 loss to the Pacers, the Raptors got off to a slow start, and nearly rallied all the way back. With Leonard out, Fred VanVleet was once again inserted into the starting lineup and finished with 14 points. The rest of the starters tried to make up the difference with Leonard out and all five had double figures in scoring, led by Serge Ibaka’s 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Kyle Lowry also had 20 point and seven assists, and Norman Powell came off the bench for 12 points.

Kawhi Leonard and Anunoby are both expected to play tonight, and coach Nick Nurse will likely utilize Leonard and Danny Green on James Hard to keep him from another 50-point scoring night.
