Minnesota Timberwolves vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview

It’ll be a Western Conference battle tonight in Minneapolis as the Minnesota Timberwolves (21-23) host the San Antonio Spurs (26-20).

The Spurs currently sit in sixth place in the West. They’ve won seven of their last 10 games and are looking to start a two-game streak with a win over Minnesota. The Timberwolves are 11th in the Western Conference, have split their last 10 and would like to stop their skid at just one game.

The Spurs and Timberwolves last played on December 21, with the Spurs coming away with a 124-98 win behind a big-time performance from Bryn Forbes, who had 22 points to counter Andrew Wiggins’ 15.

Timberwolves Analysis

Minnesota TimberwolvesAt one point, the Minnesota Timberwolves were looking like they could become a threat in the Western Conference. That all came before the tumultuous events this season, with Jimmy Butler asking to be traded, the personal issues that came when he wasn’t trade and then finally was moved to Philadelphia, and then the firing of Tom Thibodeau.

Even with all those changes, Minnesota is possibly looking worse now than they did in the situation they started with. Against Butler and the 76ers on Tuesday, Minnesota’s defense was non-existent. They didn’t have issues scoring, with seven players reaching double figures, but they also allowed seven 76ers players to reach the same feat and had no solutions for the Joel Embiid puzzle. Embiid had 31 points and 13 rebounds and finished his night off by trolling the 76ers.

With Tyus Jones injured, the Timberwolves will turn to Josh Okogie, who has seemed to play better as his role has improved on the team.

Spurs Analysis

San Antonio SpursAfter losing two straight, the San Antonio Spurs bounced back with a 105-101 win over the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks got off to a quick start, outscoring the Spurs 35-20 in the first stanza, which made San Antonio battle back all game to pull off the win in the first of their two-game road trip before they return home.

Rudy Gay and Marco Belinelli returned to the lineup for the Spurs after their loss to the Hornets and quickly showed how good the Spurs can be with both players in the rotation. Belinelli led all Spurs players with 17 points and Gay had 14 points. Patty Mills and Davis Bertans also played well. The bench has been a big reason for the Spurs’ success this year.

DeMar DeRozan is still in a bit of an offensive funk, so the Spurs will have to work to get him back up to par. He has still been San Antonio’s best distributor this season and has found ways to contribute.

DraftKings & FanDuel Fantasy Picks

DeMar DeRozan ($8.3k) and Karl-Anthony Towns ($10.9k) are the standout fantasy players for this matchup. They could both use bounce-back performances. DeRozan s just a few games removed from reaching 40-60 point performances, and FanDuel has him projected for 40.81 points tonight. Aside from his performance against Philadelphia, Towns had just come off of a 78 point night the game prior. He’s slated for 45.2 against San Antonio.

I’ve been on the Derrick White train recently when talking about value players. White ($5.9k) had been on quite a roll before a low-scoring night against Dallas, but that was likely an outlier and he is projected for 22.64 points tonight. For the Timberwolves, I’m going straight to the bench for another Derrick. Derrick Rose ($6.2k) has played well even when the team has struggled and he’s all lined up for a 25.81 point performance on FanDuel.
