New York Knicks vs. Dallas Mavericks 1/30/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds
New York Knicks vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview
The New York Knicks are on the NBA’s current longest losing streak, and they want to avoid extending that in front of their home crowd tonight, they’ll need a win over another struggling team out West in the Dallas Mavericks.
The Knicks have lost their last 10 games, are 10-39 overall and have taken over as the favorite in the Zion Williamson sweepstakes with the team with the poorest record in the NBA. While they are home tonight, Madison Square Garden hasn’t given the Knicks much refuge as they are 4-17 at home.
The Mavericks, once a Western Conference contender, have now tumbled to 13th in the Western Conference. They lost their last game, are 4-6 in their last 10 and are 22-27 overall on the season.
The Knicks and Mavericks have not met since an early season matchup. It was the Knicks winning that one 118-106 behind a standout performance from Allonzo Trier that was a sign of things to come for the young guard. Dennis Smith Jr. paced the Mavericks in that game with 23 points.

Knicks Analysis
The Knicks have already been dealing with playing without Kristaps Porzingis all season, but the injury bug has bitten hard lately, as Luke Kornet, Emmanuel Mudiay, and Frank Ntilikina are all sidelined for at least two weeks. The latter two injuries have really hurt the Knicks’ backcourt depth.
In their most recent loss, 92-101 over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday, the Knicks were simply outgunned. The Knicks had just three players score in double figures, with rookie Kevin Knox scoring 19, Tim Hardaway Jr. finishing the game with a 17-point, 10 rebound double-double and little-used rookie Mitchell Robinson scoring 10 points.
Why is Robinson playing, you might ask. Because of the ongoing feud between Knicks coach David Fizdale and center Enes Kanter. Kanter collected his fourth DNP-CD against the Hornets, and you have to question whether holding out Kanter is hurting the team more than it is helping. A feud is not good for either party, but this is something that should have been nipped in the bud. Kanter, when he has played, has likely been the most consistent player for the Knicks all season and having his 14 points and 10 rebounds per game may have been enough to flip the script in some of the losses lately.

Mavericks Analysis
Aside from New York fans getting their last chance to see Dirk Nowitzki, it’ll also be their first time to see Luka Doncic as the rookie makes his Big Apple debut.
The Mavs had been on a short two-game win streak before facing the Toronto Raptors in a 120-123 loss on Sunday. The Mavericks were right there in the mix of things but just ran into one of the better teams in the league. Doncic had quite a game and became the first teenager in NBA history to score 30 points in a triple-double performance. He finished the game with 35 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Dennis Smith Jr. is still not the primary ballhandler, but him being back in the rotation and with the team is a good thing at this point for both the player and the team. He is averaging over 16 points and five assists per game since his return.
