Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks 2/13/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks Preview

If the New York Knicks want to have any chance at ending their current record-breaking skid, they’ll have to do so against one of the top teams in the East, the visiting Philadelphia 76ers, who are looking even more dangerous since the trade deadline acquisition of Tobias Harris.

The Knicks broke their franchise record by losing their 17th straight game and are 10-46 on the season with the league’s worse record as they appear in a race with the Phoenix Suns to get the most ping pong balls in the lottery. Philadelphia enters tonight’s game on a loss, but they are 6-4 in their last 10 games and 36-21 on the season as they have slid down to fifth place in the East with a chance to get back into fourth before the All-Star break with a win tonight.

In their last matchup on January 13th, the 76ers won 108-105 behind a 26-point effort from Joel Embiid. Ben Simmons also had 22 rebounds and nine assists in the game, while rookie Kevin Knox led the Knicks with 31 points and seven rebounds.

76ers Analysis

Philadelphia 76ersPhiladelphia is still dealing with some transition after being very active at the trade deadline. Their trades introduced several new players to the 76ers roster including Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Mike Scott, James Ennis and Jonathon Simmons.

Adding that many new faces to a roster at the beginning of the season can take quite some time to adjust, but at midseason, that’s even more of an adjustment, especially considering the 76ers took some time to work Jimmy Butler into the lineup after that early season trade. But the 76ers have the leadership in place and a common goal to not let that be a distraction, but it may take some time before you see the powerhouse you expected when they made those moves last week.

One such speed bump came last night in a 109-112 loss to the Boston Celtics. While the starting five all scored in double figures, they didn’t get as much from the second unit, especially since they had become accustomed to counting on Landry Shamet for scoring off the bench before he was traded to the Clippers. Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Jimmy Butler had 22 points and nine rebounds.

Look for coach Brett Brown to rely a little more heavily on his bench tonight as they play in the second game of a back-to-back.

Knicks Analysis

New York KnicksThe Knicks have come close to winning in their last two games against the Toronto Raptors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the struggles, and the streak live on. The Knicks have all but said they are punting on this season as they plan on building in free agency and the draft.

While they were able to assemble some good pieces in their trade of Kristaps Porzingis, it’s still not enough to make a dent at this point of the season, but opening up space for two max contracts and having a chance at landing Zion Williamson could certainly change things for them next season.

In their most recent loss against Cleveland on Monday night, the Knicks were led by Kadeem Allen with 25 points. Allen is the latest player the Knicks have plucked from their two-way contracts and the G-League who have played well for the Knicks, including Damyean Dotson and Allonzo Trier.

Kevin Knox scored 13, DeAndre Jordan had 12 points and 10 rebounds in limited minutes and Dennis Smith Jr. scored 10 points in the loss to the Cavs.
