San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks 3/12/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks Preview

The Dallas Mavericks at one point this season looked like a playoff contender, but it’s been a long time since then and the roster looks like a complete overhaul. While Dirk Nowitzki has not said for sure that this is his last in the NBA, if it is, going out as a bottom of the Western Conference team is likely not what anyone had in mind. Tonight the Mavericks host the San Antonio Spurs in a Southwest Division battle.

The Mavericks are 14th in the Western Conference with a 27-39 record. They have lost their last five games and are 1-9 in their last 10. San Antonio, on the other hand, seems to have fully bounced back from their road woes. They have won their last five games, are 6-4 in their last 10 games and have moved into seventh place in the West with a 38-29 record.

In their last matchup with the Mavs, the Spurs won 105-101. They were led by Marco Belinelli’s 17 points and were able to hold off a strong effort by Mavs rookie Luka Doncic, who finished with 25 points and eight assists.

Spurs Analysis

San Antonio SpursThe San Antonio Spurs seem to be rounding into playoff form with just 15 games remaining, which is a good thing considering their 1-7 Rodeo Road Trip record came very close to putting them out of playoff contention.

They were able to extend their winning streak to five straight wins recently against the top team in the NBA as they cruised to a 121-114 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at home on Sunday. But the Spurs have done very well at home this season, and while they did pick up a win on the road in this stretch, they have a chance to move up the standings even more tonight, but it’ll have to come on the road against the Mavs.

“Just like any other year, we’ve always tried to be the best team we could be by the time the playoffs arrive, and we hope that we’ll be part of the playoffs,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Against the Bucks, the Spurs 1-2 punch of LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan led them to victory. Aldridge had a big night with 29 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks shots. DeRozan added 28 points and six assists.

As Popovich went to a shorter rotation, they also got scoring help off the bench from their sharpshooters. Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills, who have anchored the second unit along with Davis Bertans, scored 16 points apiece.

Mavericks Analysis

Dallas MavericksThe Dallas Mavericks are struggling and have lost 10 of their last 11 games. Adding injury to insult is that Rookie of the Year favorite Luka Doncic could be sidelined tonight with a mild left knee strain.

The Mavs were within grasp of an upset over the Houston Rockets, who have won nine straight, but Jalen Brunson’s game-winning shot attempt was blocked by Chris Paul as the Mavs fell 93-94.

Since they overhauled their roster at the trade deadline, Dallas has struggled on offense. In their first two losses on their current losing streak, Dallas was limited to 81 and 88 points, a rarity in games lately, especially since scoring has gone up this season.

Doncic led the Mavs in the loss with 19 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, but he’s been struggling on offense, sinking just 5-of-16 from the field and 1-of-6 from three. Brunson added 19 points and seven rebounds, but the only other Dallas player in double figures was Maxi Kleber with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
