San Antonio Spurs vs. Phoenix Suns 1/29/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds
San Antonio Spurs vs. Phoenix Suns Preview
The San Antonio Spurs are going through one of the lighter parts of their schedule, and that continues tonight as they host the Phoenix Suns.
The Spurs are 5-5 in their last ten games after going on a bit of a run just before that. They enter tonight’s game on a two-game winning streak and considering the Spurs’ home record of 19-7 and the fact that the Suns just broke through the double-digit mark in wins, they seem like the favorite on paper to extend that streak.
Overall, San Antonio is 29-22 on the season and sixth in the Western Conference. The Suns are 11-41, good enough for dead last in the West. They are also on an eight-game losing streak, and their 4-22 road record doesn’t indicate that it will be easy to end that skid tonight.
Last time the Spurs and Suns met, the Spurs walked away with a 111-86 victory on December 11. Bryn Forbes led the Spurs with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while T.J. Warren scored 23 for Phoenix.

Spurs Analysis
DeMar DeRozan will be out for the Spurs tonight, but they haven’t had much trouble picking up wins over the Pelicans and Wizards without him. In his place, LaMarcus Aldridge is playing likely his best basketball of the season. Against the Wizards, he finished with 30 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
The injuries the Spurs suffered early in the season forced head coach Gregg Popovich to tinker with his lineups. Because of some extended playing time, Bryn Forbes has become a consistent contributor on offense and is a threat from deep.
Derrick White has also shown tremendous growth this season. He went through some growing pains, but he’s been tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter player on a nightly basis and is proving he can do more than shoot and distribute. With the Spurs losing their best perimeter defender in Dejounte Murray before the season started, White’s emergence has been a big reason why the Spurs have been able to stay in playoff position.

Suns Analysis
Phoenix has not just lost a lot lately, they’ve lost badly in a number of blowouts. Last Tuesday it was a 27-point loss to the 11th place Timberwolves, and the Denver Nuggets outscored them by 36 points on Friday before losing to the Lakers on Sunday.
With DeAndre Ayton out, the Suns have turned to Dragan Bender, and on some days he looks like the player that was worthy of the pick the Suns used on him, and others make it understandable why he hasn’t been able to break into the rotation.
Devin Booker has been the constant for the Suns, but where else they get offense from has changed on a game-by-game basis.
Aside from only being able to score around 106 points per game, the Suns are also one of the lower-ranked defenses in the league, and those two factors together usually equal to something similar to what the Suns have been getting this season.
It’s something Booker wants to change, but it will likely take some offseason movement and getting lucky in the draft to move the needle much.
“The constant losing. That’s what gets to me and has always gotten to me,” Booker said. “Maybe one day there will be beauty in this. That we went through the ringer to get where we need to go. That’s my job to make that happen.”
Booker will hope to find some beauty in the final score tonight if they can pull off the upset in San Antonio.
