Clippers vs. Trail Blazers Best Bets & Picks
The best bet in this matchup is to back Donovan Clingan’s perimeter shooting.
Donovan Clingan 2+ Made Threes (+160 DraftKings)
Since Feb. 1, Clingan has shot 38.8% from beyond the arc on 3.4 attempts per game. He knocked down a pair of triples in 12 of 30 games (40%) during this span, and his +160 odds have an implied probability of 38.4%.
It’s also a good matchup because Brook Lopez is sluggish relative to the average NBA center. The veteran will be in drop coverage when defending high ball screens, which means Clingan should receive great looks on pick-and-pops. Clingan can also hoist quality catch-and-shoot triples when not involved in the primary action because Lopez does not possess the speed to run out and contest shots.
Clippers vs. Trail Blazers Preview & Breakdown
Los Angeles began the season with a 6-21 record and the sixth-worst net rating across the association. It looked like the Thunder were on track to land a top prospect via the Clippers’ unprotected first-round pick, but Kawhi Leonard and James Harden got the team back on track.
The Clippers’ front office prioritized the long run and swapped Harden in exchange for Darius Garland at the trade deadline. It’s still early, but the move appears to be a masterstroke. Garland has averaged 20.4 points and 6.4 assists per game on 62.3% true shooting since the acquisition. For context, the only players to match or exceed thresholds of 20/6/62 are Nikola Jokić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jamal Murray. Los Angeles will be a tough out in the upcoming playoffs if Garland and Leonard are both healthy.
On the other hand, Portland has been a few games below .500 for nearly the entire season. The team is built on a tough defense anchored by Donovan Clingan and Toumani Camara. However, the Blazers rank 22nd in offensive rating because they lack perimeter shooting and elite playmakers. Deni Avdija is often the sole scorer in the lineup who can reliably create for himself and others.
Shaedon Sharpe remains a massive X Factor for Portland’s playoff hopes because the former seventh overall pick goes through stretches where he looks unstoppable as a scorer. Unfortunately, he has not suited up since Feb. 6 and does not possess a clear return date.
