Louisiana inches closer and closer to online sports betting freedom by the day. Out of a total of 64 parishes (districts), 55 of them voted on allowing sports betting for live-action games. Any residents of the nine parishes that did not vote in favor of the bill will have to place bets outside of their own district but are not restricted on a state level. Louisiana is one of several states in the midst of gaining sports betting legality, and DraftKings will almost certainly be one of the first sportsbooks to swoop in and assert themselves. It is also expected that DraftKings will double down in 2021 with DFS as well, considering it is already legal in Louisiana. While optimists think August or September might be when sports betting is officially legal, others have a bit less faith and think the first quarter of 2022 is more viable.

Sportsbook Sports and Wager overview
DraftKings currently has 13 different sports that you can bet on, and those will all certainly be available in Louisiana as well. Those sports include MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, Golf, Men and Women’s Soccer, Tennis, XFL, MMA, NASCAR, CFL, and eSports.
DraftKings sportsbook also has several different types of bets that can be placed, which include parlays, prop bets, futures, and in-game action. A parlay is when you place several bets in conjunction with one another, and they all have to hit, or you win nothing. Parlays give you better odds simply because they are much more difficult to pull off successfully. In-game action features a live betting feature that allows you to bet on games already in progress. This sometimes gives bettors a better feel for the speed, pace, or trends of any given game. Prop bets can be team or player-specific and are usually based on things different than the outcome of the specific game. If they are player-specific, then the bet is dependent on how that particular player performs (i.e. how many points they score, rebounds they get, whether or not they will hit a home run, etc.)
Top 3 Reasons to play with DraftKings
DraftKings is considered one of the best sportsbooks in America for a reason. DraftKings have a stellar user interface, easily accessible promotions, and tons of different betting options and sports that allow them to maintain such a strong fan base.
New User Bonus
DraftKings has some of the most competitive promotions in the sports betting industry. They constantly raise the bar in that category and provide new users an incentive to join DraftKings’ sportsbooks. A common promotion is the $1000 deposit bonus and up to a $50 free bet, which should be made to new users every time sports betting becomes legalized in a state.
It is easy to access these promotions. For many lesser-known sportsbooks and less established companies, redeeming rightfully earned promotions can become a bit of a hassle and require endless follow-ups. DraftKings is much more straightforward to use and redeem promotions. Make sure to always read the promotions in full, but DraftKings has some of the clearest and simplest ones to follow.
DraftKings has a user interface that you can navigate with ease. It is simple to find all of the contests for your favorite sports and place bets accordingly. There are several tabs that help direct you to where you want to go, including the Home, In-Game, My Bets, All Sports, and Promotions tabs. From there, you can identify what specifically you want to search up. In addition, there are areas where you can see recent line moves, all of the player props being offered, featured games with their corresponding times, and much more.
Since 2018, the state of Louisiana has been fighting a tumultuous battle to get sports betting legalized. There was a last-ditch effort in 2019 that failed, but in the following year, they had some success. In November of 2020, the majority of parishes voted in favor of sports betting, which finally allowed the bill to move forward. Now, there is some subsequent legislation needed, but nothing that should throw too big of a wrench in the legality of sports betting.
May 2018: Supreme Court eradicated a 1992 law that banned sports betting.
November 2018: Louisiana legalized daily fantasy sports, as its nature was not described to be “sports betting”.
June 2019: Sports betting was placed on a bill that failed.
March 2020: New sports bill introduced and sponsored by Republican Senate President Page Cortez after the previous bill in 2019 failed.
November 2020: Majority of parishes (55 of 64) vote in favor of sports betting, allowing the bill to be passed on.
June 2021: Subsequent legislation will need to pass in order to make the legality official.
DraftKings Louisiana Future Bet
Saints to Win Over 9+ Games (+103)
A strong future bet for the state of Louisiana would be for the New Orleans Saints to win over nine games. Remember: the NFL just shifted to a 17-game season. There are a lot of variables and moving parts to how this season will shake out for the Saints, and the question on everyone’s mind is, “How will the Saints fare without Drew Brees?”
The Saints won 12 games last year with Brees at the helm. Despite Drew’s superb leadership skills and high football IQ, his arm strength was in question all year long. Sean Payton had to work around that, knowing that defenses would sniff that out, and as one of the most brilliant head coaches in the NFL, he was able to adjust properly. He will enter similar territory this year with a new quarterback; it will most likely be Taysom Hill.
New Orleans has undeniable offensive talent in Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas. Without Brees last year, the Saints still managed to go 3-1, so the “fear of the unknown” that currently has influenced oddsmakers should subside. The Saints at nine games is a great value pick. I personally think they should be slotted around 10 or 11 wins, but, to be fair, their schedule isn’t exactly filled with easy games.
DraftKings Louisiana Teams To Bet On
New Orleans Saints
While the Saints lost their franchise QB to inevitable retirement, they maintain two of arguably the Top 5 biggest offensive stars in the game. Insert Taysom Hill, the do-it-all “football player”, into that equation, and bettors will be lining up for Saints’ futures.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans have a roster filled with potential, including superstars Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson. They are one or two pieces away from making deep playoff runs, and that excitement, paired with Zion’s game-breaking ability, should make for very interested local bettors.
Louisiana State University (LSU)
LSU is fresh off of an incredibly mediocre year, but I don’t think that will affect local bettors and their passion for the Tigers, especially considering they aren’t too far removed from a National Championship.

DraftKings Louisiana Review
Name: DraftKings Louisiana Sportsbook
Description: DraftKings was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2012 by sports betting enthusiasts, and former Vistaprint employees, Jason Robins, Matthew Kalish, and Paul Liberman. The company was originally operated out of Liberman’s basement until it was able to gain some traction with investors. This manifested fairly quickly in July of 2012 through a venture firm, and other investors followed suit. Through many ups and downs related to the seemingly tumultuous road for sports betting to become legalized within several states in the United States, DraftKings has stuck to its roots.
