Should You Bet on the Detroit Pistons to win the 2026 NBA Finals?
The bad boys of the NBA are back in Detroit. After pushing the New York Knicks in a tight six-game series last playoffs, the Detroit Pistons have taken another massive step this season by clinching the top seed in the Eastern Conference weeks in advance of the NBA Playoffs.
Cade Cunningham is back from the punctured lung that cast doubt on his availability for the playoffs. The Pistons are deep, physical, and well-coached under J.B. Bickerstaff.
Yet their roster averages 25.8 years of age, making them one of the youngest teams in the NBA. The Pistons lack considerable playoff experience aside from their first-round battle last year, and there are justifiable concerns about how their offense will perform in tight playoff atmospheres this season.
Since the Oklahoma City Thunder just dispelled the notion that young teams can’t win it all, and the San Antonio Spurs are threatening to repeat that feat, why can’t the Pistons win the Eastern Conference or even the NBA Finals in their first full taste of playoff action?
Detroit Pistons to Win Eastern Conference?
All season, the Pistons have had the best defensive rating in the East. Jalen Duren has been an enforcer in the middle with one of the best rebounding rates in basketball and Ausar Thompson has emerged as arguably the best wing defender in the league.
The Pistons can flat out defend and they have one of the top records (33-16) against teams with winning records this season. They swept the Knicks in three emphatic wins and went 3-1 against a Boston Celtics team that is the favorite in the East per oddsmakers.
So why is Detroit getting 5/1 odds to win the conference at some books?
Well, other than Cunningham, the Pistons don’t have many players that can create their own shot. Daniss Jenkins emerged with Cunningham injured, and Tobias Harris has been a steadying veteran presence, but it takes several on-ball creators to win multiple playoff series by generating good shots on a consistent basis.
Projection systems still like Detroit as the favorite to win the conference with Basketball-Reference.com giving the Pistons a 34.5% chance and ESPN’s Power Index listing the Pistons at 35.8% to make the NBA Finals.
Betting Detroit at +500 or longer to win the East would be a voice in confidence of those raw projections as opposed to basketball history or the eye test regarding the Pistons shortcomings.

Detroit Pistons to Win NBA Finals?
Unlike more veteran teams, the Pistons could be a good bet to navigate their conference without being a good value to win the NBA Finals.
The logic follows that the Pistons aren’t ready to make a full leap into contention with the best teams in the Western Conference (OKC, San Antonio, and the Denver Nuggets) just yet. The Pistons might match up well enough against their Eastern Conference foes to will their way into the Finals, but could be overmatched in a potential matchup with any of those three teams.
Detroit lost twice to the Spurs shortly after the All-Star Break and split two games with the Thunder. They beat the Nuggets twice with key players missing for Denver, but a playoff matchup would be a completely different beast against that seasoned squad.
Considering the tough road that lies ahead for them in the Eastern Conference and their lack of overall experience, the Pistons aren’t a great bet to win the NBA title at 18/1 odds.
