Brooklyn Nets vs Miami Heat: Prediction, Starting Lineups, Odds (3/25/23)
Contents
After everything the Brooklyn Nets franchise has been through, they still find themselves in the middle of the playoff hunt as they are the current seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. That makes this game against the Heat especially vital as Miami is the current sixth seed and a half a game ahead of the Nets. Currently sitting as a +6 underdog, my prediction is that the Nets keep it close in an effort to regain their lead in the conference standings to avoid the play-in tournament.
Brooklyn Nets vs Miami Heat Betting Odds
In what is a must win situation for both teams, oddsmakers lean towards the Heat to pull out the victory by opening Miami as a -5.5 favorite at home. Bettors are backing the Heat as well, taking them up to the key number of -6 as of writing. What makes this more interesting is that oddsmakers ticked the spread up a half point, yet a majority of the money is on the Nets.
As for the total, points are expected to be scored at a moderate pace as oddsmakers opened the number at 222.5. Bettors were quick to hit the under, taking the number down to as low as 220.5 in some shops. This comes as no surprise as both units’ identities are under friendly. The Nets lack depth for a consistent scoring output throughout the full course of a game and the Heat are a defensive minded team who have serious offensive issues as well.
Brooklyn Nets vs Miami Heat Prediction
The Pick: Nets +6
As previously mentioned, I will be siding with the sharps in this matchup and take a position on the Nets at no lower than the key number of +6. Especially with Kyle Lowry and Caleb Martin popping up on the injury report for the Heat as Questionable, potentially leaving a big gap in production for the thin Miami unit to fill in. Caleb Martin especially, recently filling into the role of a power forward who relentlessly attacks the boards to give lone big man Bam Adebayo help on the glass.
Without Martin, that potentially leaves the Heat thin at the forward position which plays in favor towards the Nets as they will have more room to work with in the interior. Mikal Bridges has carved out a Devin Booker type role, hovering in the mid-range and taking advantage of open looks from stretched out defenses. By adding an interior game to his already respectable perimeter play, Bridges has rounded out into a go-to scorer for the Nets by averaging an impressive 25.8 points per game.
What’s more key for the Nets chances of keeping this close, let alone getting the outright win, is their ability to find secondary scoring. Jimmy Butler is one of the best on-ball defenders and will be expected to pick up Bridges to slow down his production. That makes Spencer Dinwiddie especially vital, especially if Lowry sits out. Should Lowry rest, Dinwiddie will have an advantage and can continue to attack the rim to shift the defense towards his liking. His ability to either finish or hit the open man as a facilitator on his drives will be key for the Nets to crack the Heat interior defense.
Betting Trends
- Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Miami
- Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings overall
Key Matchups
It’s a battle of the bigs when Claxton and Adebayo match up in the interior.
Nicolas Claxton Vs. Bam Adebayo
Claxton has quickly risen up the ranks as an elite big man this season, posing as both an anchor in the paint while also developing an offensive game. Adebayo has served in that same role for the Heat, also playing at an above average rate on both ends of the court.
That makes this matchup especially intriguing in the interior as we get to witness how both units shift their defenses to respect each other’s low post scoring. I lean towards Claxton’s ability to find more production as the Nets ability to stretch out the defense with their perimeter play will give Claxton more room to work with in the interior.
Verdict
Back the Nets at no lower than +6 as they look to regain their lead in the standings to avoid the play-in tournament.
