Minnesota vs. Michigan State Odds, Picks, and Predictions (9/24/22)

In week four of the College Football season, we get a major clash of Big Ten East vs. Big Ten West in a Minnesota/Michigan State matchup.  Both of these teams are coming off 9+ wins last season and are looking for a repeat in success this year.  While Minnesota has started off to a hot 3-0 start, Michigan State took a crucial loss against Washington last week despite entering the game ranked No. 11.  This game is being played in East Lansing so they will have the home field advantage to bounce back.  Michigan State defense has been showing similar defensive struggles they held last season however, while Minnesota offense has been a force to be reckoned with so far this season.  Let’s break into game’s matchup picks and predictions.

Minnesota vs. Michigan State Betting Odds

This game is predicted to be a close one and this will surely be a game to watch this Saturday.  Despite being +1 underdogs when the lines initially opened 2 days ago, Minnesota is now moneyline favorites at -154 odds.  They are now spread favorites at -3 points now as well.  Michigan State opened as favorites but are now underdogs at +125.

With how much the line has moved, I’m sure it could move further before Saturday as well.  Prior to last week, Michigan State would be easily the favorites without question but after losing 38-28 to Washington, it has many second guessing the MIchigan State defense and their ability to stop scoring.  Minnesota has gotten off to a hot start, but they haven’t really had a tough component yet so playing against Michigan State in East Lansing will surely give them a good test.

The over/under line placed at 51 currently.  That feels a little low for me as both of these teams have been able to put up 25 or more points in each of their games.  This is against lesser talents so oddsmakers must believe this game may be a little tighter as two Big Ten teams meet up

Minnesota vs. Michigan State Picks & Predictions

I like Minnesota in this game and I like them as possible favorites in the Big Ten West.  They seem to be looking strong this season and with a fully healthy Muhamid Ibrahim, the sky’s the limit to what they could do after getting nine wins last year.  I think they’re offense will be able to score against a Michigan State defense that struggles against high-scoring offenses.

Michael Penix Jr. was able to score with ease for Washington last week against the Spartans.  Michigan State did rally at the end to get to 28 points, but it took almost all of the first half to get the offense going.  Payton Thorne threw for three TDs but also threw an interception and was safetied in the end zone.

The Michigan State running core could not get anything going as Jalen Burger led the team in rushing with only 27 rushing yards.

The Spartans should be able to bounce off with a competitive game but I like Minnesota to win outright in a very close game.  If you’re feeling more confident I’d go with -3 Minnesota but I think it could land right around that line in a nailbiter.

The over in this game I like as well at 51 points as both of these can score well and have put up big numbers in their first games.  Michigan State playing at home should be able to score early and Minnesota going up against Michigan State D with a strong start to the season should be able to get points as well.

Minnesota vs Michigan State Key Matchups

Can Tanner Morgan hold up against this Michigan St defense, or will they be too much. Check out the key matchups for Michigan St vs Minnesota below.

Tanner Morgan vs. Michigan State defense

The major matchup I am looking up is Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan vs. the Michigan State secondary.  The secondary is where Michigan State’s defense has gotten most of the criticism and was obvious last week as Michael Penix was able to dice them up for 397 passing yards and four TDs.  I also think Ibrahim will have no problem running the ball as he’s been the star for Minnesota since he’s got there.

Tanner Morgan has gotten off to a very strong start this season but did show moments of struggle last year.  He so far has 618 yards and 4 TDs on the season with only one interception.  As Michigan State is still working out their secondary issues, I think Tanner Morgan will have another good show out on Saturday so the Gophers won’t be totally reliant on Ibrahim.
