Belmont Stakes Betting Guide: Odds, Post Positions, Previous Winners, and Expert Advice from FanDuel TV’s Todd Schrupp

The 155th running of the Belmont Stakes takes place this Saturday, June 10th, 2023. The race, which is also known as the “Test of Champions,” is the final event of the Triple Crown, which also includes the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

The betting-centric event will take place at the historic Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, which has hosted races for over a century. Post time for the Belmont is set at 6:50 p.m. EST.

There are plenty of different ways to bet on the race, which can be found with this guide. Additionally, LINEUPS.com has conducted an interview with Todd Schrupp of FanDuel TV to get some insight and official picks from a longtime horse racing media personality.

How To Bet On The Belmont Stakes Online

FanDuel Racebook (also known as FanDuel Racing) is the top horse racing betting apps on the market right now. The platform is the first of its kind, allowing users to place horse racing bets within the same app as the FanDuel mobile sportsbook.

There are plenty of different types of bets available with FanDuel Racing. Straight bets on the Win (horse to finish in first), Place (horse to finish in the top two), and Show (horse to finish in the top three) are the most common wagers in horse racing.

Exotic Bets, on the other hand, give users the potential for bigger payouts, similar to parlay betting in sports betting. A popular example of this is an Exacta bet, in which you pick the first two horses in exact order. There are also Trifectas (top three exact horses), Superfectas (top four exact horses), and Super High Fives (top five exact horses).

Bettors also have the option to “Box” these types of bets. This means that it doesn’t matter what order they finish in as long as the horses are correct. A Trifecta Box, for example, would mean choosing the top three horses to finish in the race no matter what order they finish in. While decreasing the payout of the ticket, Box bets allow for a bit more flexibility.

Belmont Stakes Odds & Post Positions

Arcangelo 38-1
National Treasure45-1
Il Miracolo 530-1
Forte65-2
Hit Show 710-1
Angel of Empire 87-2
Red Route One 915-1

The 2023 Belmont Stakes features an excellent collection of talented horses. The highlight (and current favorite at 5-2) is Forte, a horse that was the Kentucky Derby favorite before being scratched due to injury. Forte is trained by Todd Pletcher, a three-time Belmont winner that has another colt in the race with Tapit Trice, who is facing 3-1 odds.

National Treasure is coming off a Preakness Stakes win, and the Bob Baffert-trained horse is now 5-1 to win the Belmont. At 30-1, Il Miracolo is the longshot to win this year’s race. Trainer Brad Cox has two horses in the Belmont that also ran in the Kentucky Derby with Angel of Empire (7-2) and Hit Show (10-1), as well as Triple Crown newcomer Tapit Shoes (20-1).

Coming off a Peter Pan Stakes win, Arcangelo is facing 8-1 odds. After coming in fourth at the Preakness, Red Route One is facing 15-1 odds to win the Belmont.

2016 Creator 15-1
2015 American Pharaoh 3-5
2014 Tonalist 12-1
2013 Palace Malice 13-1

When planning a Belmont Stakes strategy, it’s important to look at some of the odds of the previous winners of the race. In the past 10 years, short odds have been fairly dominant. The past three years especially have featured short odds, with Mo Donegal at 5-2, Essential Quality at 2-1, and Tiz the Law at 6-5. Even lower odds were seen with 2018’s champion Justify (4-5) and 2015’s American Pharaoh (3-5).

But that doesn’t mean that longer odds haven’t come away with a win in recent years. Sir Winston most recently finished in first place with 10-1 odds in 2019. The longest shot of the past decade was 2016’s Creator, who finished with 15-1 odds.

Post position is one of the top factors for many bettors when it comes to horse racing. However, post position hasn’t been terribly consistent in the past ten years, with only one repeat winner: Essential Quality and Tapwrit in the second post. Tapit Trice (3-1 on the morning line) will be in the second post for this year’s race.

This year’s favorite Forte will be in the sixth position, the same one occupied by last year’s Belmont winner Mo Donegal. The longest shot on the board is Il Miracolo, who is in the fifth position, which most recently saw victory in 2015 with American Pharaoh’s win.

Expert Betting Advice & Belmont Stakes Prediction from FanDuel TV’s Todd Schrupp

Todd Schrupp APPROVED 1
Ahead of the 2023 Belmont Stakes, Anthony Elio — head of Horse Racing coverage at Lineups — met with Todd Schrupp of FanDuel TV to discuss what makes the race difference from other triple crown events and how new bettors can gain an edge given that information.

How the Belmont Differs From Other Triple Crown Races

With the Belmont Stakes finishing up the 2023 Triple Crown, many bettors are curious as to what sets the race apart from the rest. Well, as opposed to the Kentucky Derby’s 1.25 miles and the Preakness Stake’s 1.18 miles, the Belmont Stakes is 1.5 miles.

As FanDuel TV media personality Todd Schrupp put it in an interview with LINEUPS.com, “It’s a distance that these horses have never gone in their lives. Now, it’s true that in the Kentucky Derby, they’ll go a mile and a quarter for the first time. But this mila and a half distance, they’ll all be trying for the first time. And they never tried it again. And that’s what makes it very unusual.”

How To Choose A Belmont Stakes Horse

New and experienced bettors alike will be looking at different betting strategies when it comes to the upcoming belmont Stakes. While it’s now easy to finalize one winner, Todd Schrupp gave some specifics on wagering the final race of the Triple Crown:

“When it’s a mile and a half, because of the distance, it’s the longest distance most of these horses will ever go, it’s the longest distance in the Triple Crown series. People think the longer they go, they’ll want a horse that runs late. A come-from-behind horse. The opposite is actually true. You want a horse with some type of tactical speed.”

Considering the Belmont Stakes is 0.32 miles longer than the Preakness Stakes, this is great advice for this specific event. Schrupp further clarified, “In the first half mile of the race, they’re not going to be going at it very quickly. They’re going to be going at a pretty slow pace because the riders recognize just how long and difficult of a race this can be. Look for horses who are tactical, horses who are peaking, and truly pedigree does matter.”

Todd Schrupp’s Belmont Stakes Prediction

With nine horses scheduled to run in the Test of the Champion, bettors are looking for expert advice on the Belmont Stakes. Todd Schrupp provided LINEUPS.com with his personal pick for the race: “To me this is kind of a wiseguy horse and I ultimately made him my pick, a horse called Arcangelo. Arcangelo most recently won the Peter Pan Stakes. To me, the timing of the Peter Pan actually fits with the Belmont.”

Although Schrupp believes the Peter Pan Stakes aren’t as connected to Belmont winners as in previous years, he did highlight the importance of Arcangelo’s win in the race. “Arcangelo last time out beat a horse called Bishop’s Bay, who many thought was going to be one of the best three-year-olds out there. Arcangelo took the race to him, was impressive in what he did, and I think he has another move forward. He’s listed at 8-1 on the morning line, but I really suspect he’s going to be one of those horses you see the odds come down on.”

Todd Schrupp’s Longshot Belmont Picks

Although Todd Schrupp is big on Arcangelo and his trainer Jena Antonucci, there are a few other colts he is big on. “Arcangelo would be my top pick, and then an interesting longshot for second would be Hit Show, who ran better than he looked with fifth place in the Kentucky Derby last time out for trainer Brad Cox, who has a lot of horses in here. Then the other Brad Cox horse who I’d make my third pick would be Angel of Empire, who was the favorite in the Kentucky Derby and ultimately finished third.”

“So, if you ask for my top three picks in order of preference, I’d be 3 (Arcangelo), 7 (Hit Show), and 8 (Angel of Empire) in the Belmont, and my big stand is against Forte.” Although Forte is the favorite heading into the race, Scrupp believes that missing the Kentucky Derby will throw off his training regiment.
