Providence vs. Butler Game Preview
The Providence Friars enter the Big East Tournament on a two-game losing streak and coming off a one-point loss on the road to Georgetown. The Friars last saw Butler on Feb. 4 and won an insane game that went to double-overtime, but it isn’t the only double-overtime game between Providence and Butler this season! Early in December Butler hosted Providence to open Big East play and won that meeting in double-overtime.
Expect a close game considering there has been four overtimes over the last two meetings. The Over might be a nice look if this pattern continues, as Providence has also allowed 90 points or more in three of four games on a neutral court including – you guessed it, an overtime. Providence is led by Jaylin Sellers who hit five-three pointers against Georgetown and averages a team-high 18.1 points per game.
Butler enters the rubber match with Providence coming off a 10-point road win over DePaul. Despite the win, Butler enters the Big East Tournament losing eight of 11 games. However, Butler is undefeated on a neutral court this season with wins over South Carolina, Northwestern and a quietly impressive win over Virginia.
The Bulldogs don’t have many players who average double-digit points per game, mainly leaning on Finley Bizjack and Michael Ajayi. The latter also leads the team in rebounds, hogging the glass at 11.1 rebounds per game. Ajayi against the Friars Top 17-defensive rebound rank in the nation (27.5 per game) will be the matchup to watch, and very well dictate who wins this game in a battle on the boards.

Xavier vs. Marquette Game Preview
It’s been a disappointing season for both schools in this game, but each finished the season on different ends of the spectrum. Xavier ended it’s regular season on a two-game skid, also dropping 10 of its final 13 games. The quality is there, losing many of those games by single-digits and even took Big East champion Saint John’s to overtime on the road.
This team has players that can score points, though, featuring four players that average 10 points or more per game. Tre Carroll is the senior to watch, averaging 18 points per game while Filip Borovicanin averages a double-double. Xavier is 38th-nationally in three-point percentage and 22nd-nationally in total assists. However, Xavier struggles to get to the free throw line with 17.3 attempts per game that ranks an atrocious 322nd in the country.
Marquette, on the other hand, has won three of four games to end the season including a huge upset over UConn that saw Saint John’s win the regular season as a result. Nigel James leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16.4 points per game, while Chase Ross (14.2) and Royce Parham (12.2) will also be leaned on to score for Marquette this tournament.
The Golden Eagles rank eighth-nationally in steals per game, so Xavier will have to limit turnovers against a handsy defense. Ross leads Marquette’s steal brigade with 2.3 per game, while James also contributes 1.9 per game.

Georgetown vs. DePaul Game Preview
These two schools split the regular season series with the home team winning each encounter. This is a neutral court game however, as Georgetown lost both neutral court games earlier this season. Throwing the neutral court stats away however, since the last for each team was in November, they are playing in a familiar venue at Madison Square Garden. Georgetown was just there on March 3 in a tight loss to Saint John’s, while DePaul is playing its first game there this season.
The Blue Demons lean on defense with a defensive rating that ranks 80th nationally and allowing 69.8 points per game to opponents which ranks 67th in the country. CJ Gunn leads the team in scoring while also producing 1.1 steals per game. Layden Blocker also averages double-digit points per game, while averaging a team-high 1.6 steals per game. Brandon Maclin also sees over one steal per game with double-digit points, but despite the steals and scoring each player averages more turnovers than steals.
For Georgetown they will enter the Big East Tournament without leading scorer KJ Lewis (injured in February) but do have both Vincent Iwuchukwu and Malik Mack – the latter with 13.7 points per game along with 4.2 assists. Iwuchukwu saw a double-double in his last game against Providence, also hitting a three-pointer and making all six of his free throw shots. Make no mistake, Iwuchukwu can take this entire tournament over but has missed playing time this season.

Big East Conference Tournament Betting Pick
We’ll try the Over between Providence and Butler, although the conviction isn’t high. Typically, these teams score when they meet with at least one school scoring 81 points or more in four of five meetings. Each school has touched 80 points in the same game in three of four meetings and have entered double overtime in both games played against each other this season.
Providence is also a remarkable 21-10 on the O/U this season, while Butler’s O/U sees the combined team total records at 38-24 this season. So why isn’t the conviction high? Two reasons, the start time and the line given. Day games are notorious for slow starts, especially the first day of a tournament. Butler has gone Under 155 total points in eight straight games during the daytime – so although the team data is there to suggest the Over, the time of day suggests otherwise. Buyer beware.
