Indianapolis Colts vs Tennessee Titans

indianpolis coltsThis week’s Thursday Night Football game will go a long way in determining who wins the AFC South this season. The Indianapolis Colts (5-3) will take on the Tennessee Titans (6-2) with first place in the AFC South on the line. The Colts enter this game coming off of a loss to the Baltimore Ravens lat week 24-10. Tennessee enters this game coming off of a win against the Chicago Bears 24-17.

Last week, the Colts ended up closing as a slight favorite against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens, much like the Titans, are a run-heavy team. Clearly, oddsmakers know the Colts third-ranked rush defense can stop the run as they expected the Colts to win last week. If not for a Jonathan Taylor fumble that was returned for a 65-yard touchdown, the Colts may have won that game. Instead of a 10 or 14-point lead, the game ended up tied 7-7, and the Colts began to unravel.

So instead of winning last week and being favored today, the Colts choked away the game and enter this game against the Titans as underdogs. Philip Rivers is a roller coaster of a quarterback this season. If he has a good game, the sky is the limit for the Colts. If he doesn’t, they can still win with that rushing-attack and #1-ranked total defense.

The Titans offense needs to be able to run the ball to be effective. While Ryan Tannehill has shown that at times, he can certainly win with his arm, and it is clear the Titans need to win games on the ground. The Titans have the league’s sixth-best rushing offense but rank just 20th in passing offense.

Tennessee’s defense has not been the defense we were expecting to see this season. They own the league’s worst third-down defense and the sixth-worst pass defense. Overall, the Titans rank in the middle-of-the-pack in points allowed despite allowing 10th-most total yards per game.

Indianapolis has the much better defense in this matchup. Rivers could be in for one of his better games against a Titans’ pass defense that has struggled all season. The Colts need this game more than the Titans to avoid falling two games back. Expect this to be one of those games that have people thinking the Colts are a legit contender this season as Rivers and the defense both have a big game.

Pick: Colts+2
