FanDuel MLB Daily Fantasy Picks 7/23/19
Contents
MLB DFS is a high variance game, but one of the more fun fantasy sports to play. Cash games you want to find consistent high floor pitchers, and the same goes for hitters. Tournaments you want to find lower owned bats and pitchers that carry huge upside. This article will point you in the direction of both.
Pitchers
Aaron Nola ($10,500) – Aaron Nola has returned to solid form, coming into tonight looking to wrap up a strong July. He has a 2.10 ERA allowing a .274 wOBA, which is his best month so far yet. The strikeouts have been there, but walks have been rather high at times. Luckily tonight he faces a Detroit Tigers team that struggles against right-handed pitching. The projected lineup has a .305 wOBA, .154 ISO, and 25.2% strikeout rate. The walk rate is just 7.1% and this overall just sets up well for Nola. His price tag is a bit steep, but I like his upside in this spot.
Cash Hitters
Juan Soto ($3,900) – Washington comes into tonight facing Peter Lambert, which is a good spot for all of them. It is a limited sample in 2019, but Lambert just hasn’t shown the potential to last in the bigs yet. He has a 4.75 xFIP and is allowing a .416 wOBA to lefties. They also have tagged him for a .353 ISO. Juan Soto is a shade under $4,000, and is an excellent option tonight. He has a .399 wOBA and .221 ISO off right-handed pitching this season. The Nationals have over a five implied total at home, and weather will actually allow them to play tonight.
Dansby Swanson ($3,200) – I really wanted to write up Ronald Acuna in this spot, who is $4,400 on FanDuel tonight. A bit of a high price tag to pair with Nola, but if you are paying down, Acuna is an expensive bat I want to get exposure to. However, Dansby Swanson comes in with a solid price and good production against southpaws. He has a .377 wOBA and .208 ISO off lefties this season, and his strikeout rate sits at just 14.3%. Danny Duffy has an xFIP near five, and just hasn’t had his best stuff in quite some time. He is allowing a .183 ISO to right-handers and a 43% hard-contact rate. It’ll likely be tough sledding for Duffy tonight.
Jesse Winker ($2,900) – A solid leadoff bat for cheap can be found in Cincinnati. Jesse Winker has a .366 wOBA and .235 ISO off right-handed pitching this season. His hard-contact is up over 40%, and he is in an excellent spot tonight. Zach Davies has allowed a .340 wOBA and .178 ISO to lefties. Davies continues to be a frustrating guy to target with his 5.23 xFIP and 2.79 ERA, but here we are again. Davies throws a sinker 53% of the time to left-handed hitters, which Winker has a .429 wOBA and .198 ISO off of. The Reds have some lefties to target in this lineup, with Votto, Gennett, Dietrich depending on injuries and the lineup they roll out.
Tournament Hitters
Eric Thames ($2,800) – Eric Thames is back below $3,000 and is a nice power threat to pair with an expensive pitcher like Nola. He has a .267 ISO and .381 wOBA off right-handers. The 32% strikeout rate is unappealing, but Roark isn’t exactly a strikeout arm. Lefties have also always tagged him for strong numbers, and 2019 is no different. He has allowed a .413 wOBA and .237 ISO to lefties this season, and the 29% groundball rate is not a positive either. Add in Miller park, although it wouldn’t matter what stadium between these two teams, but Thames is in a great spot and has 2 HR upside.
Mark Canha (3,000) – Wade Miley continues to dance around the league getting out of trouble in each start, so it is hard to fully stack against him anymore. But, I do like taking some one-off shots with the A’s bats, especially a guy like Mark Canha. 2019 has been no different for the lefty masher, as he sports a .383 wOBA and .269 ISO off left-handed pitching this season. The strikeout rate drops and he has solid batted ball stats against them. For $3,000, he is a nice tournament bat to consider and we are looking at single digits for ownership.
