Michigan Mobile Sports Betting Update

MichiganOn Dec. 20, 2019, Michigan sports betting was fully legalized. Gov. Following that signing, retail sportsbooks could begin opening at different Michigan casinos. The Michigan Gaming Control Board oversees the state’s sports betting industry.

In addition to 24 tribal casinos, the Wolverine State has three commercial casinos: MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood Casino at Greektown and Motor City Casino. Michigan Sports Betting Legal Information

The launch of legal sports betting in Michigan was an interesting process. After PASPA was struck down by the Supreme Court, the process for legalized sports betting could begin. However, then-Gov. Rick Snyder quashed a sports betting bill. However, this turned out to simply be a minor roadblock, as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ultimately signed the legal sports betting bill HB 4916, making Michigan the 11th U.S. state to allow legal sports wagering. This bill not only confirmed betting on professional sporting events and college sports, but also online poker games and online casino gaming. In addition to online sportsbooks, bettors can also place wagers in both licensed commercial and tribal casinos. With the passing of both HB 4916 and HB 4308, online sportsbooks, retail sportsbooks, retail casinos, online casinos, and daily fantasy sports platforms are all fully legal in the state of Michigan.

Sports betting revenue in Michigan has a tax rate of 8.4%, which is on the lower end of the spectrum in the U.S. For reference, New York sportsbooks are taxed at a 51% rate. Additionally, Detroit commercial casinos much pay an extra 1.25% in city taxes. Meanwhile, online poker and online casinos are taxed based on revenue, with numbers between 20% and 28% Interestingly, one concern around the launch of legal Michigan betting was the effect on the Michigan lottery. This stemmed from the thought that bettors in the area might focus more on online casino gaming and sports betting than Michigan lottery games. While the effect on Michigan lottery gaming has yet to be determined, it’s safe to say that Michigan sports betting has been a major success so far. The state saw a handle of $150 million in its first month of availability, with a record $514 million bet in December of 2021. With a total betting handle of approximately $6 billion, the full launch of Michigan sports betting has been a massive success.

Two of the biggest are DraftKings and FanDuel, which have also both launched their sportsbooks in Michigan to great success. Those are by far the most widely used platforms, although Michigan DFS players also have access to DFS sites like Yahoo Fantasy Sports and Fantasy sports Shark.
