Razorbacks Booted in Sweet 16, Future Looks Promising Under Calipari
Even though the hiring of John Calipari signals the Arkansas Razorbacks have championship aspirations, it’s hard to wipe the shine away from their 2025-26 campaign, a year that resulted in them winning the SEC Conference Tournament while making a run to the Sweet 16. With their future as bright as ever, expect the Razorbacks to build on their momentum and continue to compete at a high level next season.
2026 March Madness Recap
First Round
After winning the SEC Conference Tournament Championship, Arkansas jumped up to the fourth seed in the NCAA Tournament, securing a first round matchup with the Hawaii Rainbows Warriors. An intriguing matchup on paper when factoring in how well Hawaii has played on defense, fielding a lineup who ranked in the top-70 in Adjusted Defensive Rating.
Unfortunately for the Rainbow Warriors, their production on defense was not nearly enough to slow down the Razorbacks, losing 97-78. Darius Acuff Jr faced minimal resistance in his efforts of running the offense, finishing the contest with 24 Points and 7 Assists while shooting 40.0% from three and 47.37% from the floor.
Second Round
After skating past Hawaii, Arkansas drew High Point in the second round, one of the most dangerous double digit seeds in the field. A Panthers squad who backed their success on their ability to create disruptions on one end while taking care of the ball on the other, ranking in the top-10 in Havoc and in Turnovers Allowed. With High Point avoiding costly mistakes, they were able to reduce the amount of variance in their contests, increasing their chances of winning.
While the Panthers were able to keep it uncomfortably close on the scoreboard, Arkansas’s high powered offense proved to be too much for them to bottle up, losing 94-88. Acuff Jr was once again dominant, finishing the contest with 36 Points and 6 Assists while shooting 50.0% from the field. Billy Richmond III and Malique Ewin also made their presence known with both players generating a double-double in the form of Points and Rebounds.
Sweet 16
With the Razorbacks ranking near the top of the board in most offensive metrics, they were expected to take Arizona the distance and potentially upset the Wildcats in the process. A daunting task for Arkansas with Arizona excelling on both ends of the court, ranking in the top-5 in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency while leading the league in Net Rating.
Seconds after the opening tip, it was apparent the Razorbacks were outmatched, quickly falling behind on the scoreboard with no hope of erasing the deficit. The Wildcats had no issue with exploiting the Razorbacks struggles in coverage and lack of physicality in the interior, a unit who ranked outside the top-150 in Opposing Effective Field Goal Percentage and in Def Rebound Rate.
2026-27 Season Outlook
While there has been no confirmation as of writing, it’s widely expected Acuff Jr will declare for the NBA Draft. With Acuff gone, Arkansas will have a massive void to fill as the SEC Player of the Year winner was the engine that drove their offense. A dynamic scorer who also facilitated at a high rate, the Razorbacks will need to be aggressive in the transfer portal if they want to avoid regression.
Luckily for Arkansas, Calipari has already made an impact on the recruiting trail, securing three five star recruits who will look to contribute right away. If Jordan Smith Jr, JJ Andrews, and Abdou Toure can help turn their defense into a competitive unit while maintaining their high marks on offense, then Arkansas will be one of the more versatile teams in the nation next year, making their future markets worth a look.
