Saturday’s Elite Eight Gameday Guide: Preview, Betting Lines & Analysis

Heading into the weekend, only eight teams remain, now just three wins away from hoisting the National Championship. Plenty of drama unfolded in the Sweet 16, including Purdue squeaking past Texas with a last second shot and Iowa surging in the second half to take down Nebraska.

Illinois and Arizona on the other hand faced minimal resistance in their efforts of moving on to the Elite Eight, beating Houston and Arkansas in comfortable fashion. While the Fighting Illini get a favorable draw in the next round, Arizona faces their toughest test yet, battling it out against Purdue who rivals them in most offensive metrics.

With two highly anticipated games tipping off on Saturday, there are plenty of markets to groom through. Below is a breakdown of each matchup, including a best bet and a way to target the Final Four market.

Saturday’s Elite Eight Schedule

  • No. 9 Iowa vs. No. 3 Illinois , – 6:09 p.m./TBS | Preview
  • No. 2 Purdue vs. No. 1 Arizona , – 8:49 p.m./TBS | Preview

Saturday’s Elite Eight Game Odds

After dismantling Houston, Arizona now faces off against a much softer defense with Purdue lacking the Havoc that is needed to throw them off their rhythm. By allowing the Wildcats to go through their sets, they should have no issue with creating space at multiple levels of the court, setting a scoring pace too fast for the Boilermakers to keep up with.

Iowa vs. Illinois Game Odds & Analysis

After limping into the NCAA Tournament, Iowa has been able to quickly round back into form, taking down Florida and Nebraska enroute to the Elite 8. A stunning turnaround when factoring how pedestrian they were in the regular season, ranking outside the top-20 in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and in Adjusted Defensive Rating.

Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, they lack the production on offense that is needed to match Illinois’ output, making them vulnerable to falling quickly behind on the scoreboard. Especially with their defense still struggling to defend the interior while fouling at a high rate, hovering near the bottom of the board in Opposing Two Point Completion Percentage and in Opposing Free Throw Rate.

Purdue vs. Arizona Game Odds & Analysis

Since the start of the regular season, Arizona’s odds of winning the National Championship have skyrocketed as they are the most well rounded team in the nation, leading the league in Net Rating. Their ability to play at a high level on both sides of the court helps drastically reduce the amount of negative variance in their contests, increasing their chances of winning.

Heading into the Elite 8, Arizona’s offense is in a great position to build on their momentum, battling it out against Purdue who underwhelms in coverage per their below league average mark in Opposing Effective Field Goal Percentage. With the Boilermakers struggling to face guard, the width of the Wildcats lanes to the middle will widen, improving the quality of their shot attempts in the interior.

Updated Final Four Odds

A weekend that has eluded them since 2005, Illinois is now just one win away from making their return to the Final Four. With clear advantages on both sides of the court, expect the Fighting Illini to make quick work of Iowa, overwhelming them with their high powered offense while flexing their size on defense to help contest their shots for the full duration of the contest.

Meeting them on the other side of the bracket, Arizona is also projected to move on to the next round, exploiting a Purdue defense who is incapable of slowing down their high powered offense. Especially with negative regression looming large over the Boilermakers offense, digging themselves into a deficit that will be tough to erase. To bolster your portfolio, pair Arizona and Illinois in a two team moneyline parlay with zero intentions of hedging.

Elite Eight Players to Watch

Labeled as one of the betting favorites to compete for the Wooden award, Purdue’s Braden Smith lived up to the hype, averaging 14.3 Points and 8.9 Assists per game while shooting 44.6% from the floor. His facilitation will be crucial in their daunting matchup against Arizona, desperately needing to shift their defense to create larger gaps in their coverage.

One of the more exciting freshmen in the nation, Illinois’ Keaton Wagler burst onto the scene by lighting up the scoreboard on a nightly basis, averaging 17.7 Points per game while shooting 41.1% from three and 44.4% from the field. With Iowa struggling to keep a defender on his hip, Wagler will be able to continue to attack the rim at a high rate, setting himself up for another monster performance.

Saturday’s Elite Eight Best Bet, Pick, Predictions

Circling back to Arizona, it’s hard to ignore the advantages they will possess on offense, taking advantage of a Purdue defense who will struggle to contest their shots in the interior. An area of the court where the Wildcats have thrived, ranking well above league average in Effective Field Goal Percentage.

The Boilermakers low Havoc rate will also make it easier for the Wildcats to break away from their coverage, creating more space for their spot up shooters which will improve the quality of their shot attempts from three. Barring a cold shooting night, expect Arizona to avoid falling into a prolonged scoring lull, increasing their chances of clearing the over on their team total.

Score Prediction: Arizona 81, Purdue 74
Best Bet: Arizona Team Total Over 78.5 (-110)
