Son Heung-Min, LAFC
Last season, as K-Pop was gaining a new level of popularity in the U.S., another South Korean export – established soccer star Son Heung-Min — arrived in LAFC and immediately made an impact. He scored nine goals in ten matches and instantly meshed with Denis Bouanga to create a dynamic duo.
This season, he’s been instrumental to what the Black & Gold do, with seven assists so far, but he’s yet to score. We’re looking for that to change on Saturday, simply because he’s due, but also because of LAFC’s Saturday opponent. Minnesota United, though fourth in the West, is the only team in that conference’s top eight with a negative goal differential, having shipped 13 goals. Defensive linchpin Michael Boxall is listed out on this matchday’s MLS injury report, making the Loons all the more susceptible to what Son can do.
Cristian Espinoza, Nashville SC
Espinoza’s move from San Jose to create a three-headed hydra with Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar was one of the biggest stories of the offseason, and so far, it’s paid dividends. Espinoza has seven goal contributions in a season in which Surridge is among the Golden Boot leaders. Last time out, Espinoza scored the opening goal in a tidy 2-0 dismissal of Atlanta, and his squad got a midweek rest while Saturday’s opponents, Charlotte, got routed 4-1 on Wednesday by an Orlando team that’s currently among one of the league’s worst.
Charlotte is also continuing its home/away Jekyll and Hyde look from 2025. That year, Charlotte got 40 points at home versus 19 points away; this season, Charlotte’s won 10 of its 14 points in Bank of America Stadium, going just 1-2-1 on the road. Expect Charlotte’s road woes to continue and for Nashville’s No. 7 to pick up a goal along the way.
Nicolás Fernández, NYCFC (+155)
On Wednesday against FC Cincinnati, Nicolás Fernández put in two goals inside of 35 minutes to get his team out to a 2-1 lead. While it finished 4-4, with Evander getting a late PK to turn three points into one, the brace put the Argentine striker just one goal behind Petar Musa in the Golden Boot race — and yet he’s still a little under-the-radar for all but the hardiest of MLS fans.
Saturday brings NYCFC across the border for a match with CF Montréal, who have struggled this season and were among the first teams to jettison a head coach not even a quarter of the way through the season. Last week, CFM got a bit of a new coach bounce effect in beating Red Bull 4-1, but even figuring in that lopsided scoreline, they’re still with a -8 goal differential on the season, averaging 2 ½ goals let in per match. Certainly, if the trendlines continue, Nico’s a good candidate to get on the scoresheet.
