Chinese Taipei vs. Australia Preview

Chinese Taipei is sending Jo-Hsi Hsu to the mound for this game. The 24-year-old right-hander put up a 2.05 ERA and 0.81 WHIP with 120 strikeouts in 114 innings in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) this season. What’s interesting here is that earlier this offseason, Hsu rejected a three-year deal worth $9.6 million from the Dodgers to sign with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan. With clear big-league interest, this is an intriguing pitcher who can touch 98 MPH.

Hsu looked terrific in a recent exhibition game, throwing three scoreless innings and going 44 pitches. Since this is a huge game against Australia if Chinese Taipei is to advance out of the group stage, we can project 50+ pitches from Hsu this time around.

On the other side, Australia is sending out Alexander Wells, who had limited action for the Baltimore Orioles back in 2021-2022. Wells put up a 3.42 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 50 innings in the Australian Baseball League this past season. Australia will likely need their bats, like Cleveland Guardians’ top prospect Travis Bazzana,  to carry them in this game.

Chinese Taipei vs. Australia Betting Analysis

Chinese Taipei opened around -180 favorites in this game, but the line has moved to -210 on DraftKings. This movement reflects the edge on the mound for Chinese Taipei.

This is the only available market for this game at the time of this article. Even still, I’m riding with Chinese Taipei in this spot. The pitching advantage could be too much to handle here.

Hsu is their best pitcher, with good enough stuff to get teams like the Dodgers interested in signing him. His high velocity could pose a problem for Australia’s bats.

Judging by Wells’ underwhelming numbers in the Australian Baseball League, he could be in a tough spot against Chinese Taipei, who has Yu Chang, a shortstop in the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ minor league system, who hit .483 back in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Australia had a terrific showing in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, advancing out of the group stage, and will bring back 17 players from that roster, but facing Chinese Taipei’s ace could be daunting.

Best Bet: Chinese Taipei ML to win 1 unit
