After getting thoroughly outplayed in game two, the Buffalo Sabres were able to round back into competitive form in game three, beating the Boston Bruins 3-1. While their offense had no issue with pressuring their net, their back line still struggled to find their footing, conceding 2.2 Expected Goals.

On the other end, their Bruins back line have been equally as abysmal, giving up 2.3 Expected Goals while ranking near the bottom of the board in most defensive metrics. With both defenses incapable of defending their net, expect game four to feature plenty of scoring opportunities, resulting in a high scoring affair.

Even though the Sabres were able to win the Atlantic division title, they are far from a well rounded contender, fielding a back line who ranks well below league average in Expected Goals Against in All Situations and in 5-on-5 Play. Their lack of production on defense brings in a higher amount of variance into their contests, lowering their chances of winning.

Fortunately for the Sabres, their front line has been able to keep them competitive, fielding a unit who resides near the top of the board in Expected Goals For. Even with Jeremy Swayman playing at a high level, the Sabres versatility will force him to scramble, opening up larger gaps beside him.

Every bit of their production on offense will be needed just to ward off a Bruins front line who have elevated their level of play since the start of the playoffs, averaging over 3.00 Expected Goals in their first three games of the series. Especially with positive regression looming over David Pastrnak who has been unable to find the back of the net since game one, yet generated five Shots on Goal in game three.

With both front lines pressuring each other’s net at a very high rate, expect game four to turn into a thrilling high scoring affair. If the full game total climbs up to 6.5, then reduce the size of your wager.
