Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic Game Preview, Picks & Odds for Friday, April 17, 2026

The 2026 NBA Play-In Tournament continues with a game between the Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic. The winner advances to face the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs, while the loser’s season is over.

Charlotte has won three of four matchups this season.

Hornets vs. Magic Betting Analysis

What. A. Game. The Hornets defeated the Heat in an overtime thriller that featured massive shots from Coby White and LaMelo Ball. Miles Bridges also had a game-saving block and scored 28 points.

Charlotte did an excellent job of grabbing offensive rebounds and avoiding turnovers. However, its three-point shooting was ugly. The Hornets went 18-of-56 from deep (32.1%) and routinely butchered open shots. Ball and Kon Knueppel, in particular, need to bounce back after rough shooting performances.

On the other hand, Orlando had a disastrous loss to Philadelphia. Excluding Desmond Bane’s heroic effort, the Magic scored 63 total points on 35.3% shooting from the field and 14.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Yikes! Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs, and Wendell Carter Jr. could not hit the broad side of a barn.

In their defense, head coach Jamahl Mosley and the coaching staff rarely place them in a position to succeed. The offense is beyond vanilla and contains very little off-ball movement. If Orlando is going to keep pace with Charlotte’s explosive offense, then something has to change regarding actions or rotations.

The best bet in this matchup is taking the Hornets to cover the spread. Their offense is far more dynamic than Orlando’s, and the gap in three-point shooting talent is immense. Charlotte also led the NBA in offensive rebound percentage after the All-Star break and thrived at avoiding shooting fouls. This is crucial because the Magic led the league in free throw attempt rate after the break and often spiraled into extended offensive slumps without them. Plus, the Hornets had the fifth-best net rating on the road this season.
