Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons Game 1 Preview, Picks & Odds for Tuesday, May 5, 2026
Game 1 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons is set for 7 p.m. Eastern on NBC Sports. The Cavaliers and Pistons have not made the Conference Finals since 2018 and 2008, respectively, so both franchises are hungry to advance.
These teams split their regular season games 2-2, so it has been an even matchup this season.
Cavaliers vs. Pistons Betting Analysis
Cleveland cruised to a 2-0 series lead against Toronto because the offense scored 121.7 points per 100 possessions. Donovan Mitchell and James Harden looked unstoppable during this stretch, especially when Harden ran pick-and-rolls with Jarrett Allen.
However, Toronto made defensive adjustments and bottled up Mitchell, who averaged 20 points per game on 38/27/100 shooting splits in the final five games. The Raptors went the distance and raised concerns about Cleveland’s future.
Detroit also struggled relative to expectations, as it trailed 3-1 and likely would not have orchestrated a comeback if Franz Wagner did not injure his calf. Jalen Duren was especially disappointing because he may earn All-NBA honors yet scored 10.6 points per game and was largely invisible in the first round. This has to change if the Pistons want to reach the NBA Finals.
On the bright side, Cade Cunningham averaged 32.4 points and 7.1 assists per game despite dealing with atrocious spacing and poor play from his teammates. He’s repeatedly proven his ability to carry the Pistons’ offense regardless of the circumstances. Cunningham must be the best player in this series for Detroit to advance.
The best bet for Game 1 is taking Jalen Duren to record at least 27 points plus rebounds. It’s true that he disappeared in the first round, but Orlando was a bad matchup for him because of their physical defense and scrappy mentality. Duren now faces a Cleveland squad that is vulnerable to physical centers inside the paint.
Across three regular season matchups versus the Cavs, Jalen Duren logged 15, 38, and 49 points plus rebounds.
