Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers Game 5 Preview, Picks & Odds for Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Game 5 between the Houston Rockets (1-3) and Los Angeles Lakers (3-1) is set for 10 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Luka Dončić and Kevin Durant remain sidelined, but Austin Reaves could suit up for the first time since April 2. Reaves will likely be on a minutes restriction if he plays.

Rockets vs. Lakers Betting Analysis

After topping out at a high of 101 points in regulation during the first three games, the Rockets broke through in Game 4. They scored 115 points on 48.1% shooting from the field and 40% shooting on triples. The team also turned defense into offense, as Houston scored 30 points off turnovers.

Amen Thompson racked up 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting , dished out seven assists and played his typical stellar defense. Los Angeles could not stop him from generating paint touches, especially when Luke Kennard was the primary defender. It’s a trend that should hold in Game 5 because of the athleticism gap between Thompson and the Lakers.

Excluding garbage time, the Rockets have now won Thompson’s 159 minutes by 6.2 points per 100 possessions. That’s 80.7% of the total minutes through four games, so how are they losing 3-1? Los Angeles has outscored Houston by an astonishing 55.3 points per 100 possessions during the 20 non-garbage time minutes that Thompson rested.

If the Rockets are going to extend this series, then they must find ways to keep afloat on both ends of the court when Thompson takes a quick breather. Three-point shooting luck would obviously help, but counting on this to happen for three straight games is not an option.

The best bet for Game 5 is backing the Rockets to cover the 4.5-point spread. They have the defensive personnel to slow down Los Angeles, and their offense found its groove and confidence in Game 4. The decision to give Aaron Holiday more playing time was wise, as he adds more ball handling and perimeter shooting to the offense. Overall, look for Game 5 to go down to the wire.
