The Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets open their series at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Amazon Prime. They have faced each other 28 times since Rudy Gobert was traded to Minnesota, and each team has won 14 games. It’s one of the best rivalries across the association.

Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Betting Analysis

Minnesota finished the regular season ranked 13th in offensive rating and 8th in defensive rating, although Anthony Edwards missing 21 games is partly responsible for the team’s less than ideal offense.

Gobert remains an elite interior defender who should make an All-Defensive team. Can the Wolves’ defense survive when he rests? It’s a crucial question, as Minnesota surrendered 108.8 points per 100 possessions with him on the court this season compared to 120.6 points per 100 possessions when he took a breather, per Cleaning the Glass.

Trade deadline acquisition Ayo Dosunmu is also under the spotlight. The former Bull has averaged 14.4 points and 3.5 assists per game on 61.9% true shooting since being traded to Minnesota at the deadline. He needs to stabilize the bench unit and take advantage of Denver’s mediocre rim protection.

Meanwhile, Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray are highly dependable co-stars, and Aaron Gordon is an impact monster who acts as a game-changer on both sides of the court when healthy. Denver’s trio can go toe-to-toe with anyone, but will the rest of the Nuggets pull their weight?

Cameron Johnson and Christian Braun must knock down their catch-and-shoot triples, while Spencer Jones’ defense off the bench could swing stretches. Peyton Watson returning to full strength would be a boon because he’s a two-way star in his role.

Finally, the best bet for Game 1 is taking Dosunmu to score at least 12 points. According to Basketball Index, he ranked 18th across the NBA this season in unassisted rim attempts per 75 possessions (min. 1000 minutes). Dosunmu excels at getting downhill, and he faces a Denver squad that lacks elite point-of-attack defenders and surrendered the 8th-highest field goal percentage inside the paint.

Dosunmu has scored at least 12 points in 19 of 24 games (79.1%) since joining the Wolves. He will probably see a slight decrease in playing time, but Minnesota still needs him to play a lot.
