Montreal Canadiens vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Game 2 Preview, Picks & Odds for Tuesday, April 21, 2026
Arguably the most surprising result so far in the first round of the playoffs, the Montreal Canadiens managed to steal game one with a win in overtime. More stunning yet, the Lightning were actually thoroughly outplayed by the Canadiens, losing in Expected Goals 3.04-2.10.
Heading into Tuesday night, expect positive regression to swing towards the Lightning’s way by taking advantage of a Canadiens back line who grades out poorly in most defensive metrics. WIth their own defense smothering the Canadiens, their clear advantages on both sides of the ice will help them pull away on the scoreboard, covering their -1.5 puck line in the process.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Betting Analysis
Heading into the playoffs, the Lightning were considered one of the more well rounded contenders in the league, rivaling the Colorado Avalanche at the top of the oddsboard for the Stanley Cup. Ranking in the top-10 in Expected Goals For and in Expected Goals Against in All Situations, the Lightning are able to cut into the amount of variance in their contests, increasing their chances of winning.
That was not the case in game one, getting outplayed on both sides of the ice, resulting in a stunning loss in overtime. Even with his back line actually doing a good job at lessening the quality of the Canadiens Shots on Goal, Andrei Vasilevskiy was still unable to wall them off, finishing the contest with a .789 Save Percentage.
With the betting favorite for the Vezina Trophy capable of rounding back into form, expect the Canadiens to struggle to convert their low quality shot attempts into goals on the board, leaving them prone to falling into a prolonged scoring lull. Especially with the Lightning keeping the Canadiens out of their crease, ranking ninth in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots.
On the other end, the Lightning high powered front line will continue to find themselves in a position to thrive by taking advantage of a Canadiens defense who resides near the bottom of the board in Expected Goals Against. With Montreal incapable of face guarding, their forwards will be able to consistently break away from their coverage and pressure the net at a higher rate.
With Tampa Bay rounding back into dominant form, expect the Lightning to overwhelm the Canadiens on both sides of the ice, evening up the series in dominant fashion. If you do not already have any exposure on the Lightning in their futures market, consider laying a wager on them to win the series and the Eastern Conference Championship before their odds plummet after a win on Tuesday night.
