Thursday’s Anytime Goal Scorer Picks
- Porter Martone
- Trevor Zegras
- Seth Jarvis
- Sebastian Aho
Porter Martone Anytime Goal Scorer
After failing to play at a competitive level on offense in the regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers front line have carried over their struggles into the playoffs, ranking near the bottom of the board in Expected Goals For in All Situations. Even when receiving minimal support from his linemates, Porter Martone has still been able to play at a high level, averaging 0.54 Expected Goals per game.
While a matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes normally indicates negative regression is looming large, Martone’s aggression has helped scramble their back line, allowing the Flyers to generate over three Expected Goals in their loss in game two. With the Hurricanes struggling to keep a body on Martone’s hip, the Flyers forward will be able to pressure their net at a higher rate and snap his six game scoreless streak.
Trevor Zegras Anytime Goal Scorer
In his first year with the Flyers, Zegras has been able to sustain his high level of play on offense, averaging 0.26 Expected Goals and 2.06 Shots on Goal per game. Unfortunately for the former Anaheim Ducks forward, he was unable to find his footing in game two, finishing the contest with just 0.17 Expected Goals in their 2-3 loss in overtime.
With Owen Tippett out with an injury, Zegras will be tasked with shouldering a heavier workload, resulting in a higher volume of Shots on Goal which increases his chances of scoring. Especially with Martone pulling defensive attention away from him with his gravity, widening the width of Zegras’ shooting lanes in front of the crease, improving the probability of his shot attempts turning into Shots on Goal.
Seth Jarvis Anytime Goal Scorer
Since the start of the regular season, Seth Jarvis has been able to play at a very high level, averaging 0.44 Expected Goals per game. His efficiency was on full display in the Hurricanes win in game two, generating 0.76 Expected Goals in the form of one Goal and four Shots on Goal.
Heading into Wednesday night’s contest against the Flyers, expect Jarvis to build on his momentum by attacking a back line who continues to fall down the board in Expected Goals Against. Even with Dan Vladar patrolling their net, the Hurricanes versatility will force the Flyers goalie to constantly scramble between the pipes, creating larger gaps on the outside for Jarvis to exploit.
Sebastian Aho Anytime Goal Scorer
When playing alongside Jarvis, Sebastian Aho has been able to take advantage of the extra space his linemate creates with his playmaking, averaging 0.34 Expected Goals and 2.47 Shots on Goal per game. Their combined production has helped turn the Hurricanes front line into a well oiled machine, ranking second overall in Expected Goals For in All Situations and in 5-on-5 Play.
With the Flyers forced to shade their coverage towards Jarvis, Aho will be able to consistently weave the puck through their stretched out back line, leading to a higher volume of shot attempts in front of their crease.
