Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons Game 5 Preview, Picks & Odds for Wednesday, April 29, 2026
Game 5 between the Orlando Magic (3-1) and Detroit Pistons (1-3) is slated for 7 p.m. Eastern on Amazon Prime. The Magic may be without one of their stars, as ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on April 28 that “Franz Wagner has been diagnosed with a right calf strain and his availability for Game 5 against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday is uncertain and will depend on response to treatment.”
Orlando is looking to become the first eight seed to advance since the 2023 Heat, but Wagner missing the contest would be a significant blow to the team’s winning chances. He has been excellent on defense and gives the offense secondary scoring and playmaking.
Magic vs. Pistons Betting Analysis
Cade Cunningham shot 32.6% from the field and committed 17 turnovers over the past two games, but it’s difficult to fault him too much when he’s essentially the Pistons’ entire offense. His teammates – especially Jalen Duren and Daniss Jenkins – are shells of themselves compared to their regular season forms, and nobody can make a catch-and-shoot triple.
Excluding garbage time, Detroit’s offense has scored 108.6 points per 100 possessions this series with Cunningham on the court versus 88.3 points per 100 possessions when he rests. The Pistons are actually winning the Cunningham minutes but getting demolished during the non-Cunningham minutes.
Ausar Thompson’s inability to shoot jumpers is a fundamental issue. The Magic are packing the paint and making life extremely difficult for Cunningham because they can ignore non-shooters like Thompson and Duren. However, the Pistons need Thompson’s defense on the court, so it’s a conundrum for head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.
The best bet for Game 5 is taking Ausar Thompson to grab at least seven rebounds. He’s a freak athlete and phenomenal rebounder for his size. There are also plenty of boards to go around because this series features highly inefficient offenses. Overall, Thompson has logged 7, 8, 8, and 9 rebounds through four games, and he should feast again.
