Temple Owls Roster 2019 Owls Roster

Head Coach: Geoff Collins        2017 Salary: N/A        Offensive Coordinator: Dave Patenaude       Defensive Coordinator: Andrew Thacker

Stadium: Lincoln Financial Field       Surface: Grass        City: Philadelphia        State: Pennsylvania

The initial conference power rankings have the Temple Owls sitting on the edge of the top three, positioned at fourth in the standings. However, a team that finished with four wins over the last month and half of 2017, including a 28-3 bowl victory over FIU, should have loftier expectations. Besides, this is a program that just reloads. Temple owns six winning seasons out of the last nine, albeit with four different head coaches running the football show in Philadelphia. Head coach Geoff Collins flipped quarterbacks mid-season, and 2017 turned from disaster to respectability with the play of Frank Nutile under center.

Temple Looks to Start Faster and Finish Stronger in 2018

No Longer Offensive on the Offense

Nutile is back, and there is no longer a quarterback controversy on the Temple sideline. He is the starter and should be able to produce quality play after a year of experience. Ryquell Armstead limped his way through 2017, but that allowed David Hood to surface as a strong addition to the Owl's offense. In 2018, Temple will have both healthy to start the season. Another aspect of the offense that helped fuel last season's poor start was an offensive line devastated by injury. After using 10 different combinations the first half the year, the line began to fall into shape. Four return in 2018 to provide a stable wall for Nutile.

The second year QB will look to make a connection with one of Temple's most highly-recruited players the last five seasons. Wide receiver Ventell Bryant has "play on Sunday" hands, but the injury bug has also oft bitten him. Bryant will look to stay on the field in 2018, and if so, Nutile may have a superstar in the making as a pass target.

Being Defensive on Defense

Geoff Collins earned his coaching reputation as a defensive mastermind while at Mississippi State and Florida. He has the scheme, and Temple has the players. The Owls may have the best core of linebackers in the AAC conference. Safety Delvon Randall has more of that "play on Sunday" talent, and Temple may rush the passer as well as any team in the nation. Last season the Owls dragged down the opposing quarterback 39 times, and recorded a whopping 102 total tackles for loss.

This year's team is even more talented and Collins is an expert at using that talent. Whether or not Temple can stop some of the high-powered offenses in the AAC remains to be seen, but they have enough talent to make every drive a challenge. Temple starts the 2018 season with three winnable games, one against low-ranking AAC member team Tulsa. Their first big test will come against a Big Ten team, the reloaded Maryland Terrapins. Nutile needs to build on his success from the second half of 2017, and the defense must perform like a Geoff Collins defense.

If these two things happen, Temple could be looking at a 4-0 start heading into the meat of their conference schedule. With some tough conference games on the road, winning their second conference title in three years will be a challenge. However, if the offense doesn't turn offensive and the defense stays Temple-like defensive, 2018 should be a hoot for the Owls.
