Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams Matchup Preview (1/17/22)
This Monday, January 17th, the rematch between the NFC West rivals the Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals will kick off at 7:15 CST at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Both teams are entering the first round of playoffs after a shocking loss to teams that seemed significantly underqualified. After the loss, the Cardinals wrapped up their regular season in second place in the NFC West and 11-6 while the Rams ended their regular season in first place in the NFC West with a record of 12-5. Since the teams are in the same division, they have already met three times this year, giving each team a win, so this matchup will determine the true powerhouse of the NFC.
Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Ram Betting Odds
The final game of NFL’s Wild Card Weekend may just be the most exciting. The matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams is projected to come down to the wire. When the teams met in the regular season, the Cardinals took their victory 37-20, and the Rams won the rematch 30-23. After the Cardinals have struggled in the latter half of their season, many worry if they’ll be able to make a comeback to redeem themselves over their Los Angeles rivals. Considering all things, the spread has been placed in favor of the Rams at -3.5 (-110), leaving the Cardinals +3.5 (-110). The Cardinals have had most of their success on the road, going 8-1, whereas the Rams have a 5-3 record at home. The stakes have never been higher for this matchup which will lead to impressive performances on both sides to leave the viewers with a great, close game.
The over/under has been placed at 49 points. The Rams alone average 27 points per game, and the Cardinals average 26.5 points per game. When games have high pressure, both quarterbacks thrive. I think it’s very fair to say that there is a high probability that this game can soar past 49 points quickly. These are two of the best offenses in the league that put up large point values in almost every game. If this game were not to surpass 49 points, it would be a genuine surprise due to the explosive nature of both teams.
My Prediction: Rams Win 35-30, Rams Cover, Over 49

Arizona Cardinals Analysis
The Arizona Cardinals have clinched their first playoff spot since 2015, even after the loss to the Seattle Seahawks last weekend. The Cardinals have built their team with patience over the years, and it has paid off tremendously. However, the team has been struggling in the second half of their season, taking significant losses from the Detroit Lions, the Carolina Panthers, and the Indianapolis Colts. If the Cardinals want to pull off their first playoff win in six years, the Arizona team will need to clean up their act, go back to basics, and play like the team we saw at the beginning of the season.
Kyler Murray has been the leader of this team since he was the Heisman winner and first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma in 2019. Murray has made his name a staple in the NFL after his crazy pass accuracy and his crazy speed to escape pressure in the pocket. Murray was only able to play in 14 games this season after suffering from an ankle injury midseason. In his 14 games, Murray was able to throw for 3,787 yards and rushed for 423 yards. He averaged 270.5 yards in the regular season but had an average of 325.5 yards against the Rams. Murray will be up against one of the bottom pass defenses in the league, giving him ample opportunity to look for his trusted receivers downfield. However, the Rams’ defense has been very successful with applying pressure on Murray and making huge sacks for detrimental losses in yards. Kyler will have to remain calm under the collapsing pocket if he wants to bring home his first playoff win.
The alternating cycle between targets of receivers Christian Kirk and AJ Green leaves the Cardinals to be one of the biggest contenders in the NFL. Christain Kirk leads the Cardinals in yardage with 982 receiving yards on 77 receptions in the regular season. AJ Green follows close behind with 848 receiving yards on 54 receptions. With both receivers being huge threats, it becomes very difficult for defenses to guard. Kirk distracts defenses for short gains, while Green keeps the secondary focused on him, which allows for huge gaps in the middle of the field. Both receivers will be looked towards as big targets in this matchup and may be heavily guarded, making it difficult to find space for Murray to trust a long throw.

Los Angeles Rams Analysis
The 2021 NFC West victors scored their home-field advantage in the first round of the NFL playoffs after watching the Cardinals lose to the Seattle Seahawks in the last week of the regular season. The Los Angeles team is made up of a stacked offense that is almost unmatched in the NFL. They have the best receiver in the league, a top-three quarterback, and a top defense that knows how to apply immense pressure on any quarterback.
Matthew Stafford finished his 12th regular season with 4,886 passing yards, landing him in the top three quarterbacks in the league. He falls in second place for passing touchdowns with 41 scoring passes and ranks fourth in QBR with a rate of 63.5. He played every game of this season, averaging 287.4 yards per game. Against the Cardinals, he fell just below that, averaging 283.5 yards. Stafford’s success comes easy with the help of his trusted receiver, Cooper Kupp.
Cooper Kupp has shattered the Rams’ franchise record for most receiving yards in one season by over 200 yards. The previous record was held by Isaac Bruce with 1,780 receiving yards. Kupp finished out his fifth regular season with 1,947 yards on 145 receptions with 16 touchdown catches. Kupp ranks first in the league in all categories and has proven himself to be one of the best players in the league. The Cardinals’ defense has allowed Kupp to put up 187 yards in their two matchups. Although the Cardinals have a top 10 pass defense, there is no guarantee that they will be able to hold up the superior skill of #10.
When the Rams aren’t trusting the ball with Cooper Kupp, they will utilize their top rusher, Sony Michel. Michel leads the team with 845 rushing yards and has been able to rush for 90 yards against the Cardinals’ defense. The Cardinals have had success against stopping the rush in the red zone all year, so Michel will be most beneficial on the drive downfield and to free up the field to distract the defense.

Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams Daily Fantasy Picks
In any fantasy football matchup, the owner of Cooper Kupp is going to make huge gains. Kupp is the overall best receiver in the league and finished the regular season with 25.9 fantasy points per game with only two games below 20 points. Many say Kupp is the obvious fantasy MVP and has been unmatched compared to any other receiver in the league.
In the quarterback position, it’s almost a no-brainer to pick up Kyler Murray. Murray has been my trusted quarterback all season, and he rarely steered me wrong. He averaged 21.5 points per game with mixed points from rushing and passing yards. Murray almost always hits his bets and rarely disappoints his fans.
