The Houston Rockets begin their first round matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC. Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves remain sidelined for the foreseeable future, so the Lakers are counting on LeBron James to turn back the clock. Can James get the best of his long-time rival Kevin Durant?

Rockets vs. Lakers Betting Analysis

Houston swung for the fences last offseason by trading Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and draft capital in exchange for Kevin Durant.

The 37-year-old averaged 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game on 64.1% true shooting this season, so the Rockets struck gold. Unfortunately, season-ending injuries to Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams slashed Houston’s championship equity to the point where the Rockets are merely a good but not great team.

Eliminating them will not be easy, though. The Rockets are physical and lengthy on defense and hammer the offensive glass. Durant, Alperen Şengün, and Amen Thompson can also each explode for 30+ points.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles is in trouble with Dončić and Reaves expected to miss most or all of the series. It’s true that the Lakers outscored opponents by 9.2 points per 100 possessions across 479 minutes this season with James on the court sans Dončić and Reaves. However, there is a big difference between doing this for small stretches at a time compared to an entire game against playoff competition. And what happens when James rests? The Lakers cannot expect him to play 40 minutes per game at his age.

Los Angeles is at a disadvantage in terms of defense, rebounding, and star power, so it needs to dominate other areas like three-point shooting and turnovers in order to have a fighting chance.

The best bet is taking Amen Thompson to produce at least 27 points plus rebounds and at least 30. Los Angeles’ defense struggles at the point of attack and lacks elite rim protectors. It has no answer for Thompson’s freakish athleticism and speed, so the former fourth overall pick should generate paint touches at will and control the glass.

In three matchups against the Lakers this season, Thompson recorded 31, 33, and 37 points plus rebounds.
