Portland Trail Blazers vs. San Antonio Spurs Game 1 Preview, Picks & Odds for Sunday, April 19, 2026
The Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs begin their first-round series at 9 p.m. Eastern on NBC. San Antonio won two of three matchups this season, including the most recent one despite being without Victor Wembanyama.
Trail Blazers vs. Spurs Betting Analysis
Portland ranks third in defensive rating since the All-Star break and features excellent defenders at all positions. The unit owns enough length, size, and defensive playmaking to make San Antonio’s offense work for every shot.
On the other hand, the Blazers are 23rd in offensive rating and 22nd in true shooting percentage since the break. They struggle mightily to knock down triples efficiently and lack tablesetters.
Portland survived the play-in tournament thanks to a monstrous performance from Deni Avdija, who tallied 41 points and 12 assists. But someone needs to step up and be a co-star or Portland’s offense is in dire straits against San Antonio.
The Spurs have won 30 of their past 34 games! Wembanyama’s historic blend of length and mobility makes him one of the most impactful interior defenders ever, while Stephon Castle will receive a few All-Defensive nods in his career. Factor in the Spurs’ depth and lack of weak links, and it’s a championship-caliber defense.
The offense is capable of going toe-to-toe with other contenders, but there are slight concerns about three-point shooting and how the unit operates when Wembanyama has an off night. It’s also the first playoff series for most of the team’s core, so inexperience may be an issue at some point.
As for the best bet, it’s taking Avdija to record at least seven assists. He’s a slasher who thrives at getting downhill, but it will be difficult for him to create enough space for a clean shot with Castle on his hip and Wembanyama lurking. Look for Avdija to pass more than usual and generate a ton of kick-outs.
In three matchups against San Antonio this season, he averaged 19 potential assists per game and logged six, eight, and 10 assists.
