Early NFL Week 9 Predictions & Look-Ahead Lines
Carolina Panthers () at Green Bay Packers ()
The improving Panthers are 4-3 heading into Week 8, and although Bryce Young has been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, it’s still somewhat debatable how much of a true drop-off there is between him and veteran Andy Dalton if the latter is forced to a brief starting stint. It appears that will be the case for at least Week 8 against the Bills, a game that will test Carolina’s 3-0 home record but one they could potentially remain competitive in given their ground attack and Buffalo’s struggles stopping the run.
Then, the Packers have been locked into a lot of close games, and although they’ve come out of all but one with either a win or tie, they have a tough Week 8 assignment against the Steelers and Green Bay franchise legend Aaron Rodgers. A loss isn’t out of the question by any stretch, especially with the Packers just 3.5-point favorites.
Even if Carolina just plays Buffalo tough – a distinct possibility with Dalton guiding the offense and the matchup on the ground – while the Pack stumbles, this very elevated number of 10.5 is likely to come down at least below the 10-point threshold. Notably, every Green Bay game since Week 1 has been decided by nine points or less.
Denver Broncos () at Houston Texans ()
The Broncos got quite the scare from the Giants in Week 7 and now host the high-octane Cowboys in Week 8, a game Denver is a relatively modest 3.5-point home favorite for. Despite the Broncos’ defense looking more beatable than expected at times, Bo Nix and his side of the ball is starting to click, and the matchup against the Cowboys’ sieve of a defense could allow Denver’s offense to contine its ascension.
The Texans, meanwhile, appear to have some serious problems on that side of the ball, coming off a sluggish performance on Monday night in Seattle to close out Week 7. While the Seahawks’ defense is legitimate, it’s not the first time C.J. Stoud and company struggles to move the ball consistently, and Houston will have to deal with an increasingly healthier 49ers team in Week 8.
If Denver manages a solid home win and Houston continues to disappoint in Week 8, this small 1.5-point projected advantage for the Broncos could expand a bit more, perhaps even getting up to a -3.
Kansas City Chiefs () at Buffalo Bills ()
The Chiefs appear to be picking up steam and Patrick Mahomes finally has all of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown healthy simultaneously. The defending AFC champs could therefore be in for a big second half of the season, but they have an interesting Week 8 assignment in the form of a Monday night road date with a Commanders squad that could actually have all of Jayden Daniels (hamstring), Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) and Deebo Samuel (heel) back for that contest.
The Bills dropped two straight before their bye, but as mentioned earlier, have a winnable albeit likely tough road matchup against the Panthers upcoming in Week 8. Buffalo is still rightly favored in that game, however, and a win after a week of rest and reflection wouldn’t surprise in the least.
The Chiefs could well still leave the nation’s capital with a win, but they’ll then be traveling again on a short week to Buffalo, and the Bills have won each of the last four regular-season games in the series. As has become the norm, Josh Allen and co. once again have a January playoff loss to avenge in this spot, and it’s conceivable the public eventually pushes this early Chiefs -1.5 line to the brink of a Pick ‘Em, or perhaps even further considering Buffalo’s usual home-field advantage.
