Detroit Lions vs Kansas City Chiefs Same Game Parlay: +1400 Odds
It’s about as fun of a season opener as you can ask for as the reigning Super Bowl champs Kansas City Chiefs host one of the most high-powered offenses in the Detroit Lions. With the Chiefs defense facing injury concerns and contract issues, the Lions should have no issue integrating their new weapons into their hyper-efficient system. On the other end, it’s business as usual for Mahomes and company as they look to once again lead the league in total yards and points per game.
Detroit Lions o23.5 Team Total Over
Star defensive tackle Chris Jones is currently holding out until he gets a new contract from the Chiefs, potentially leaving a massive void in the interior of their defensive line. This opens up the opportunity for creating holes in the middle, giving the running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery chances to hit the gap and burn the second level of the defense.
In the secondary, L’Jarius Sneed is currently listed as questionable. While expected to play, Sneed being anything less than 100% will cause issues for the Chiefs weak coverage as they finished around average in Def Pass DVOA. Lions OC Ben Johnson excels at creating separation for his weapons on the outside in his offense, screening across the middle and gaining yards after the catch.

Travis Kelce Anytime Touchdown
Editor’s Note: Pick could be changed upon more clarity of Kelce’s status
The Detroit Lions made it their mission to improve a near bottom ranked secondary this offseason and that is exactly what they did by signing CJ Gardner-Johnson and Cameron Sutton. They added some future insurance by drafting Alabama’s Brian Branch to eventually fill in as a starter at safety.
While the additions will serve as an immediate improvement, it may take some time to gel with new faces at nearly every position in the secondary. A major issue when going up against the best passing team in the nation with Patrick Mahomes picking apart the gaps.

Filling in those gaps is star tight end Travis Kelce who has dominated the past few years as the best pass catching tight end in the league. Defending the tight end position has been a major issue for the Lions, giving up the most touchdowns to tight ends in the league last year. With fresh faces scrambling in the middle in an effort to keep playmakers in front of them, expect the crafty Travis Kelce to expose the gap and generate high quality scoring opportunities in the red zone.
David Montgomery 2+ Touchdowns
While the Lions excelled at adding talent to their weakest part of the rosters, the best move they made this offseason was retaining OC Ben Johnson. Under Johnson, the Lions offensive production rivaled the Chiefs in terms of efficiency and scoring.
A big part of Johnson’s offensive success is how he managed the ground game. With their pass game forcing opposing defenses to space out in an attempt to cover the field, this allowed the likes of Jamaal Williams to hit the middle and find himself with ample room to gain yardage.
Under Johnson, Williams led the league in total rushing touchdowns as he was heavily featured in the red zone. With David Montgomery slotting into that role, expect him to get high-quality looks at the end zone as the Chiefs are potentially without Chris Jones and will also have to respect the Lions elite pass attack.
Patrick Mahomes 250+ Alt Passing Yards
While the Chiefs have an advantage on the ground, expect Mahomes to still be able to sling it against the new look Lions secondary with ease. Kelce demands a brunt of the attention while allowing their other wideouts to benefit from singular coverage.
Their new look offense limited explosiveness but banked on efficiency last season to still top of the league metrics. This limits turnovers and creates more opportunities to drive down the field.
