After dispatching James Madison in the first round of the playoffs, the Oregon Ducks move on to the quarterfinals to face off against Texas Tech. A massive step up in quality of opponent as the Red Raiders head into the Orange Bowl ranked near the top of the board in most defensive metrics. Their dominance on defense was on full display in the Big 12 conference championship as they held BYU to just seven points in their 34-7 victory over the Cougars.

With negative regression looming large over the Ducks offense, their defense will need to give them the production they need to help limit the amount of variance in their contest. Fortunately for Oregon, Texas Tech will be unable to exploit their struggles inside the 20 as the Red Raiders grade out poorly in red zone success rate. With both defenses in a position to thrive, expect points to come at a premium which shades value towards the under.

While the competition has been underwhelming for the most part, Texas Tech’s defense have been one of the most consistent units in the nation as they shut down opposing offenses on a weekly basis. By the end of the year, the Red Raiders ranked near the top of the board in Points per Opportunity, Havoc, and in Success Rate. While they have struggled to contain the big play, their secondary makes up for it with their suffocating coverage in the shortened field.

On the other side of the field, the Oregon Ducks front seven have rivaled the Red Raiders grades on defense as they head into the quarterfinals ranked above league average in Stuff Rate, Second Level Line Yards, Rush PPA, and in Success Rate. Their ability to slow down running backs in the trenches will be tested against the Red Raiders as Cameron Dickey generates explosive runs at a high rate while averaging 5.5 Yards per Carry.

With Cameron Dickey expected to struggle to generate yards after the line of scrimmage, the Red Raiders will be forced to throw at a heavier rate in order to sustain their drives down the field. Unfortunately for Behren Morton, the Ducks coverage will drastically lessen the width of his passing lanes as their secondary resides near the top of the board in Def Pass Success Rate and in Pass PPA.

With Texas Tech expected to sputter before reaching the 40, the Ducks can mask their struggles in the back half of the field and keep the Red Raiders off the scoreboard. Factor in the Red Raiders high level of play on defense and the Orange Bowl is projected to be a low scoring defensive slugfest.
