Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets Matchup Preview (11/14/21)
The Buffalo Bills travel to Met Life Stadium in week 10 for a matchup with their AFC East rival, the New York Jets. Buffalo is coming off an embarrassing 9-6 loss on the road to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills are 5-3 and leading the AFC East. The Jets who are 2-6, were once again dominated in primetime, losing to the Colts 45-30 in week 9. New York fans can only say, “Same Old Jets” after the team’s performance in Indianapolis. Buffalo is scoring 27.5 points per game on the road this season. New York is scoring 22.3 points per game at home.
Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets Betting Odds
Buffalo is listed as a 13-point road favorite. The over/under is 47.5 points for these long-time division rivals. New York is 2-6 against the spread this season; 2-1 at home. Buffalo has outscored opponents 235-118 this season. The Jets have scored at least 30 points in two straight games after not doing so in the previous 27 games.
Will the Buffalo offense continue to struggle against inferior competition? In their last two games against two of the bottom teams in the NFL, Miami and Jacksonville, Buffalo only scored 32 points combined after averaging 37.4 points per game in their previous five contests.
Questions for the Jets are: Will Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur continue to be aggressive with Mike White under center? The Jets have scored 64 points in the past two games; they had only 80 points in the first six. Finally, will head coach Robert Saleh have his defense prepared to play against the Bills multi-dimensional quarterback Josh Allen?
My prediction: Bills 37-28, Bills do not cover, but over 47.5 points.

Buffalo Bills Analysis
Buffalo’s offense is averaging 390.1 yards per game ranking them eighth in the NFL. They’ve scored 30 or more points in five games this season.
In the loss to Jacksonville in week 9, Bills quarterback Josh Allen was 31-47 for 264 yards and two interceptions. Allen is 1-9 in his career in games he throws at least two interceptions. Before his struggles the past two weeks, Allen had been playing excellent football, leading Buffalo to a four-game winning streak before losing to Tennessee in week 6. During the winning streak, the Bills #17 threw for 1,100 yards, rushed for 144 yards, and 13 total touchdowns. On the season, the Wyoming product has accounted for 2,555 yards of total offense (2,236 passing and 319 rushing). He’s also thrown 17 touchdowns and rushed for another three in 2021. Despite the loss in Jacksonville, Allen is listed at +400 to win the 2021 NFL MVP.
Buffalo has an excellent group of receivers led by Cole Beasley, Stefon Diggs and Emmanuel Sanders. Beasley leads the team with 51 receptions: averaging 8.7 yards per catch in 2021. He also has at least one reception in each of his 38 games played with the Bills since joining the team in 2019. Diggs is the team leader in receiving yards with 588 on 48 catches; he’s also added three touchdowns. He’s also averaging 73.5 receiving yards per game in 2021. Emmanuel Sanders is the Bills big-play threat capable of stretching the field. On the season, Sanders is averaging 17.1 yards per reception.
Buffalo has the number one ranked defense allowing 262.6 yards per game to their opponents. The unit has two shutouts on the season and is allowing 14.8 points per game: ranking them first in the NFL. The Bills also lead the league in allowing only 177 passing yards per game. Finally, they also lead the league in takeaways with 19 (11 interceptions and 9 fumble recoveries). This will be a tough matchup for the Jets with a quarterback making only his third career start.

New York Jets Analysis
New York’s head coach Robert Saleh announced on Wednesday, Mike White will start at quarterback this week against Buffalo. White coming off his record 37 completions for 405 yards and three touchdowns in the week 8 victory over the Bengals (in his first career start), looked poised to continue his magic against the Colts, but that wasn’t meant to be. After starting the game 7-11 for 95 yards and touchdown, White left the game with a right-hand injury and did not return. In three games this season, the Jets backup has thrown five touchdown passes. Josh Johnson came in after White’s injury and played well. Overall, he threw for a career high 317 yards and three touchdowns; his first touchdown passes since December 22, 2018. Jets rookie quarterback, Zach Wilson who started the first six games of the season but has been out since suffering a knee injury in the loss to the New England Patriots in week 7. On the season, Wilson has thrown for 1,168 yards, four touchdowns, nine interceptions and been sacked 19 times.
White is truly a wonderful story of perseverance, but if I’m, Saleh I start the rookie, Wilson, if he’s able to practice. He needs the experience as the Jets are building for the future. Hopefully watching the past few weeks has given the #2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft new perspective on what he’s seeing on the field. Wilson can make all the throws, perform well outside the pocket, and has that moxie needed to be successful.
The Jets running game has struggled all season averaging 77.1 yards per game. Rookie running back Michael Carter is emerging as a strong runner and reliable receiver out of the backfield. Before the Colts game he had a streak of two straight games with 100 yards from scrimmage. In New York’s win over Cincinnati in week 8, he had a career-high 172 yards from scrimmage. The rookie from North Carolina, is leading the team with 328 yards rushing.
Defensively New York was terrible against the Colts in week 9 especially against the run; allowing 8.7 yards per carry. If head coach Robert Saleh’s background is defense how does his team look unprepared in most of their games this season? New York has the 32nd ranked defense in the NFL allowing 408.1 yards per game to their opponents. In the loss to the Colts, the Jets allowed 532 yards of total offense. Injuries have hurt the defense this season, for example Gang Green is missing key players such as defensive end Carl Lawson who was to be the team’s featured pass rusher like Nick Bosa’s role in the 49ers defensive scheme, but he tore his Achilles in the preseason. Now safety Marcus Maye is out for the season with an Achilles tear and might have played his last game as a Jet. Is Saleh truly the right man to lead the Jets franchise?

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets Daily Fantasy Picks
Due to the Jets inability to stop the run, having Buffalo’s Devin Singletary in your lineup as a flex player could make sense. Singletary is the Bills leading rusher with 355 yards; averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Three players have gone over 100 yards rushing in a game vs. the Jets this season.
Rookie receiver Elijah Moore was expected to be a big contributor in the Jets passing game after having a wonderful preseason, but he did not get off to a good start catching eight passes in his first five games for 66 yards. But, in his last three games he has 14 receptions for 164 yards. Against the Colts, Moore became the first Jets rookie with at least two touchdowns in a game since Stephen Hill did so on September 9, 2012, against the Bills. He could be a player you might want to pick up and hold onto if you’re in a keeper league.
