Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Matchup Preview (1/16/22)
The playoffs are finally here, and Sunday’s slate of games starts with the number seven seed Philadelphia Eagles (9-8) playing the number two seed Tampa Bay Buccaneers (13-4) at Raymond James Stadium in the wild card round. The Eagles lost to the Cowboys 51-26, while resting most of their starters including quarterback Jalen Hurts. Philadelphia has scored over 25 points in nine games this season. The Buccaneers locked up the number two seed in the NFC playoffs with a 41-17 home victory over the Panthers. Tampa Bay has scored 30 plus points in 10 games this season. The teams last met in week six of this season with the Buccaneers beating the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field 28-22.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Odds
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers who are looking to be the first repeat Super Bowl champions since the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX, also quarterbacked by Tom Brady, are an 8.5-point home favorite over the Eagles. Philadelphia is 8-8-1 against the spread this season; 6-3 on the road. The Eagles are 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 playoff games as an underdog. The Buccaneers are 0-5 against the spread in their last five wild card games. Philadelphia is 2-11 against the spread in their last 13 games following a double-digit loss at home. Tampa Bay is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games as a home favorite. The underdog is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings between the Eagles and the Buccaneers.
The G.O.A.T. will be looking for his eighth Super Bowl championship and getting it started with a victory over the Eagles would make it sweet. The last time Tom Brady played the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs was Super Bowl LII as the Patriots fell to the Nick Foles led Eagles 41-33. I’m sure that memory will be in the back of Tom Brady’s mind.
My predictions: Buccaneers 34-23, Buccaneers cover the 8.5-point spread, game goes over 49 points.

Philadelphia Eagles Analysis
The Eagles offense finished the regular season ranked 14th in the league averaging 359.9 total yards of offense and scoring 26.1 points per game.
Second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts triggers the Eagles offense. In his first year as a starter, Hurts threw for 3,144 yards, 16 touchdowns while completing 61.3% of his passes with an 87.2 quarterback rating. The second-round pick in the 2020 draft can also do damage with his legs as he led Philadelphia in rushing with 784 yards and touchdowns on the ground with 10: averaging 5.6 yards a carry. He’s rushed for at least 60 yards in seven games this season. In the week six game loss to Tampa Bay, he was 12-26 for 115 yards, one touchdown, one interception while rushing for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Hurts has gone 5-1 in the last six games he’s played; in those contests he has accounted for 10 touchdowns (five passing and five receiving).
Rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith, the 10th pick in 2021 draft has the most receiving yards by a rookie in Eagles history with 916. The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner led Philadelphia in receptions with 64 and receiving touchdowns with five. Smith is averaging 14.3 yards per reception and has over 70 yards receiving in five games this campaign. Tight end Dallas Goedert is the other main threat in the Eagles passing game. He’s second on the team in receptions and receiving yards with 56 and 830 respectively. Goedert is averaging 14.8 yards per catch this season. The fourth-year pro is averaging 40.3 yards per game in his career.
Philadelphia enters the playoffs with the number one rushing attack in the NFL averaging 159.7 yards per game. Per NFL.com, the Eagles have at least 30 rush attempts and 100 plus rushing yards in 11 straight games for the first time since 1949-1950. Miles Sanders has missed the last two weeks after breaking his hand, but head coach Nick Sirianni said at his press conference on Monday that he is “hopeful that his most explosive player will be available.” On the season, the former Penn State Nittany Lion has rushed for 754 yards (second on the club); averaging 62.8 yards per game. Jordan Howard has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list and will help in Philadelphia’s running game. Howard has rushed for 403 yards in 2021-22; playing in seven games he’s averaging 58 yards per contest. If Philadelphia is going to win, the ground game will be the key because it’ll allow the Eagles to control the game thus keeping Tom Brady and Tampa Bay’s explosive offense off the field.
Philadelphia’s defense heads into the playoffs allowing 328.8 yards of total offense to their opponents and 22.6 points per game. The Eagles have only allowed more than 20 points in one of their last six games: week 18 vs. Dallas.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Analysis
Winning 13 games for the first time in team history, the Buccaneers offense enters the playoffs averaging 405.9 yards per game, second in the NFL and scoring 30.1 points per game, second in the league.
Tampa Bay’s passing game finished the regular season ranked number one averaging 307.6 yards per contest. This season, Tom Brady became the oldest player to lead the NFL in passing yards (5,316) and touchdowns (43). Additionally, he completed 67.5% of his passes with a 102.1 passer rating. In 2021-22, the 22-year veteran surpassed Drew Brees’ 471 completions in 2016, for the most completions in a season in NFL history with 485. Brady also joined Drew Brees as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with multiple seasons of at least 5,000 yards passing. He’s also thrown at least three touchdown passes in game 101 times in his career, most such games in NFL history. In four playoff games last season, including the victory in Super Bowl LV, Brady threw for 1,061 yards, 10 touchdowns while completing 58.7% of his passes.
This season, wide receiver Mike Evans had 74 catches for 1,035 yards and 14 touchdowns (most in team history). Evans has at least 1,000 yards receiving in eight straight seasons. In the win against Carolina, he had two touchdown catches, becoming the first player with at least 13 touchdown receptions in two straight seasons since Green Bay’s Jordy Nelson in 2014-16, per NFL.com. The Buccaneers leading receiver Chris Godwin tore his ACL in the loss to the Saints in week 15 will be missed in the playoffs. Receiver Tyler Johnson (36 catches for 360 yards) and Cameron Brate (30 catches for 245 yards and four touchdowns) will be looked upon to make up for the production lost with Godwin’s injury.
In his 11th season, Rob Gronkowski had 55 catches for 802 yards and six touchdowns. He has the most 100 plus yard receiving games in NFL history by a tight end with 32. The four-time Super Bowl champion has 89 catches for 1,273 yards and 14 touchdowns in 20 career playoff games. Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Daily Fantasy Picks
Per NFL.com, the 2021 Eagles (2,715) surpassed the 1949 team (2,607) for the most rushing yards in a season in franchise history. Boston Scott who’s contributed to that total with 373 yards will be returning for the wild card round after being on the COVID list. Additionally, he’s rushed for a career-high seven touchdowns this season.
The five-time Super Bowl MVP is the all-time leading passer in playoff history with 12,449 yards and 83 touchdowns, Tom Brady is obviously the one player the Eagles must stop if they’re going to pull off the playoff upset. This season, he’s thrown 31 touchdown passes and no interceptions in the red zone, the most passing touchdowns without an interception in the red zone in the NFL, per NFL.com. Including the playoffs, the three-time league MVP has passed for over 300 yards in 125 games in career.
