Opening Week 2 NFL Odds: Point Spreads, Totals, Moneylines, Including Chiefs-Eagles
A significant portion of the NFL Week 1 slate is now in the books, and bettors’ eyes begin to turn to the Week 2 NFL odds. Here are some key games and their initial betting lines following each team’s results. All times below are ET.
Opening Week 2 NFL Odds: Spreads, Moneylines, Totals
New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys: Sunday, Sept. 14, 1:00 p.m.
The Giants had a mixed bag of an afternoon to start the Russell Wilson era, remaining fairly competitive in the nation’s capital for three-plus quarters before the Commanders pulled away to record a 21-6 victory. There was already talk of rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart mixing into the offense on specialized plays as early as Sunday, and although that didn’t come to fruition, Wilson’s middling performance Sunday could certainly accelerate the timeline on a QB change.
The Cowboys arguably outperformed expectations on an emotional opening night for the defending champion Eagles, pushing Philadelphia to the limit before a late CeeDee Lamb drop and a subsequent Jalen Hurts third-down scramble snuffed out hopes of a major upset. Yet, Dallas’ offense with a healthy and aggressive Dak Prescott at the helm offered reason for optimism, as did a respectable performance by the defense in its first game without the traded Micah Parsons.
Both teams’ opening performances leave the Cowboys as a home favorite of up to 3.5 points as of Sunday afternoon, with a boost in that number certainly possible in the coming days. They were field-goal favorites on the look-ahead line.
New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins: Sunday, Sept. 14, 1:00 p.m.
The Patriots undeniably looked like an improved team in their first game under new head coach Mike Vrabel, but the veteran savvy of Geno Smith and a strong effort by Las Vegas’ defense led to a double-digit win for the visitors. Drake Maye did put together a solid performance to kick off his second season, spreading the ball around effectively to seven different targets, including new weapons Stefon Diggs and TreVeyon Henderson.
The Dolphins were on the wrong end of what has been the most surprising Week 1 score to date, taking a 33-8 thumping from the Colts on the road. Tua Tagovailoa looked out of sorts for significant stretches while throwing a pair of picks, taking three sacks, and losing a fumble. The effort on both sides of the ball naturally is cause for early concern for head coach Mike McDaniel and his staff, but Miami is opening as up to a three-point home favorite.
Philadelphia Eagles at Kansas City Chiefs: Sunday, Sept. 14, 4:25 p.m.
The Eagles survived a feisty visiting Cowboys team by a 24-20 score on opening night, while the Chiefs weren’t quite as fortunate against their own division rival, the Chargers, on Friday night in Sao Paolo, Brazil, dropping a 27-21 decision.
Xavier Worthy’s likely absence due to a shoulder injury sustained in a collision with Travis Kelce on the third play of the game is going to make this an interesting line to follow leading up to kickoff. Fittingly, sportsbooks are already split a week ahead of the game in terms of the favorite and underdog, and bettors could certainly keep that trend going over the next seven days.
Washington Commanders at Green Bay Packers: Thursday, Sept. 11, 8:15 p.m.
The Commanders got a season replete with high expectations off to an encouraging start with a 21-6 home victory over the Giants. Washington’s defense increasingly clamped down as the game went along, while Jayden Daniels turned in a signature dual-threat performance while complemented by rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who offered a reminder of why Washington considered Brian Robinson expendable by averaging 8.2 yards per carry and scoring a rushing TD.
Meanwhile, the Packers were arguably even more impressive in their own home opener, considering they dominated a talented division rival in the Lions by a 27-13 score that didn’t really speak to how much Green Bay controlled the tempo of the contest. Jayden Reed was able to play through a foot injury and deliver his first TD of the season, while rookie first-round pick Matthew Golden got his feet wet with a couple of grabs.
With a short week, the Pack is unsurprisingly up to 3.5-point home favorites in the immediate aftermath of each team’s Week 1 game.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals: Sunday, Sept. 14, 1:00 p.m.
The Jaguars navigated a weather delay and managed to put together a successful debut in head coach Liam Coen’s offense, sending a Panthers team that entered the season with some buzz back down to earth with a 26-10 thumping. Trevor Lawrence got rookie Travis Hunter involved to the tune of six receptions, while Travis Etienne made a case to remain the top dog in the ground attack with a 143-yard rushing day.
The Bengals were intent on not starting the season off with another dud, but they still had to scratch and claw for a 17-16 road win in Cleveland. While Joe Burrow threw for only 113 yards, Cincy’s defense led the way by picking off and sacking Joe Flacco twice apiece in an impressive showing, while also limiting Cleveland to 2.0 yards per carry.
The Bengals are between 3.5- and 4.0-point favorites as of late Sunday night.
Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts: Sunday, Sept. 14, 4:05 p.m.
The Broncos had a bit more trouble than anticipated against rookie first overall pick Cam Ward and the visiting Titans, but Denver still managed to prevail by a 20-12 score in a hard-fought battle. Bo Nix threw a pair of picks and finished with under 200 yards through the air, perhaps a sign teams may be more prepared to counterattack what he brings to the table now that there’s a season’s worth of film on him.
The Colts shockingly dominated the visiting Dolphins by a 33-8 score, and Daniel Jones put together spectacular team debut that included 272 passing yards and an average of 9.4 yards per attempt. Rookie first-round pick Tyler Warren was peppered with a team-high nine targets by Jones, who also displayed excellent chemistry with Michael Pittman. The test figures to be much stiffer in this spot against a Denver defense that sacked Ward six times and forced two fumbles overall.
The Broncos remain 2.5-3-point road favorites as of Sunday night, the same projected advantage they sported in the look-ahead line.
Buffalo Bills at New York Jets: Sunday, Sept. 14, 1:00 p.m.
The Bills staged a comeback for the ages, dealing the Ravens the second soul-crushing loss in nine months with a wild 41-40 comeback victory on Sunday night. Josh Allen offered a vivid validation of his MVP credentials with a 394-yard effort through the air and four total touchdowns, helping lead Buffalo to 22 fourth-quarter points. The Bills’ offense ultimately clicked on all cylinders despite a slow start, with Keon Coleman (8-112-1) hinting at might be a breakout second season.
The Jets were involved in a wild high-scoring affair of their own, and even though they came up short by a 34-32 score to the Steelers, head coach Aaron Glenn had plenty of reasons to be encouraged after his first game. Justin Fields looked like a legitimate option under center with three total TDs and 266 total yards, while Breece Hall (145 total yards) and Garrett Wilson (7-95-1) rounded out the Big Three. However, New York‘s defense clearly has some work to do despite its talented pieces, and after allowing four TDs to Aaron Rodgers, it’s fair to wonder what Allen could do against them.
