New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Matchup Preview (9/19/21)
For the first time since 1973, all four starting quarterbacks in a division are 25 years old or younger.
And it’s in the AFC East, where two of these young studs will be going head-to-head in this matchup.
Both took a loss in their career debuts, but Mac Jones impressed far more than Zach Wilson did. Jones was lights out in Week 1 and was largely let down by the rest of his team.
However, it’s worth mentioning that Wilson improved greatly in the second half, and we may see a totally different version of him to start this game.
But will Wilson be enough to lift the rest of the Jets roster out of mediocrity? Or, maybe more importantly, will it be enough to cover the 5.5-point spread?
Let’s dive into our best bets for this Week 2 divisional matchup.
New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Betting Corner
This line opened at Patriots -4 but, at the time of this writing, was quickly bet up to -5.5.
I’d bet that line easily. The Patriots have mismatch issues all over the field in this battle, and although the Jets are a home underdog, they’re still the Jets. Jones looked far more polished than Wilson in Week 1, while Wilson rallied in the second half, New York still only managed 4.2 yards per play against the Panthers.
Building off that, I think the under is an even better bet. The Carolina defense is fine, but the Patriots unit is a big step up. With Becton hurt, Belichick is going to move his array of versatile front seven players all over the line, and he’ll absolutely wreck Wilson in the process. I don’t see how the Jets move the ball.
Meanwhile, the Patriots are 27-13 to the under on the road since 2016, going under in four of five matchups with New York during that stretch. The Patriots can move the ball, but the whole offense is a work in process and the red zone issues are massive.
So, give me both the Patriots -5.5 and the under 42.5 in this Week 2 divisional matchup.
My predictions: Patriots Win 20-10, Patriots cover -5.5, Under 42.5 points

New England Patriots Analysis
There is absolutely no reason why the Patriots shouldn’t have won last week. The Patriots out-dueled the Dolphins in the following categories:
- Total yards (393 to 259)
- Total plays (70 to 52)
- Yards per play (5.6 to 5.0)
- Time of possession (36:43 to 23:17)
- First downs (24 to 16)
- Passing yards (281 to 202)
- Completion percentage (71% to 59%)
- Rushing yards (125 to 74)
- Yards per carry (4.17 to 3.22)
But when push came to shove, the Patriots could not get it done in the red zone. Jones led three separate drives of 72+ yards that all ended in field goals. And then there was the dreaded Damien Harris fumble at the end of regulation that cost New England the victory. Which was even more frustrating after he performed to start the game:

The penalties were another killer. New England recorded eight in total for 84 yards, including three for unnecessary roughness. None of that should happen to a Bill Belichick-coached team, especially when the Dolphins totaled just 28 yards of yellow flags.
But, if we are to look on the bright side, the big picture looks great in New England. Outside of two touchdown drives at the beginning of each half, the Dolphins were completely stuffed. Josh Uche and Matt Judon were immense on the defensive line, while JC Jackson and Sophomore Kyle Duggar lead one of the more physical secondaries in football.
Meanwhile, Jones looked so good that he’s now the betting favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Behind his 7.2 yards per attempt and 71% completion rating, the Patriots converted 11 of their 16 third downs. And no throw was better than this rainbow to James White on 3rd and 11:

Meanwhile, Nelson Agholor proved to be the deep threat that was promised, the 12-personnel sets (two tight ends) with Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry were productive, and Jakobi Meyers made some big grabs out of the slot.
All-in-all, everything was a positive for the Patriots in Week 1 except the final score. Look for them to be a force the rest of the way, especially when Stephon Gilmore takes the field again mid-season.

New York Jets Analysis
The big storyline is Wilson, who was putrid in the first half but rallied strong in the second.
Wilson got sacked six times and picked once by the Carolina defense, and Jets fans went into the half thinking they just found their next bust. However, Wilson rallied, and completed 14 of his 21 attempts in the second half for 174 yards and two touchdowns. That included this beauty of a throw on the run:

Wilson should be fine, but the Jets have many other issues to deal with.
The offensive line was terrible already, and now LT Mekhi Becton will miss four to six weeks with a dislocated knee cap. That’s a huge loss for a line that lacks depth options.
On top of that, the defense is still an issue. After finishing 28th in Pass Defense DVOA last season, the Jets secondary allowed Sam Darnold to light them up. And in the process, they lost safety Lamarcus Joyner, who’s now likely out for the season.
Considering how the Patriots defensive line and pass attack looked in Week 1, the Jets as currently constructed are in for a long Week 2 battle.

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Daily Fantasy Picks
I’m looking to avoid the entire New York Jets offense. However, I’m also looking to avoid the Patriots rushing attack, which while deadly, is going up against a Jets defense that finished eighth in Rush Defense DVOA last season.
That leaves us with the Patriots passing attack, which I believe will be very effective in this game.
However, I’d avoid both the tight ends. Smith and Henry are both talented pass catchers, but they’re going to be splitting every rep and catch this season, and it unfortunately devalues them both.
Mac Jones is a good option at quarterback. He should complete a high percentage of his passes and throw at least one touchdown.
Nelson Agholor saw seven targets in Week 1, and he tallied 14.4 yards per reception and a touchdown on them. Just like we expected him to, he’s going to be the deep threat in this offense, so he has a lot of big play upside. However, we saw him being used a few different ways, so I’m quite high on him in this matchup.
I’d also look at Jakobi Meyers. Meyers is going to be the de-facto slot receiver for New England this year, and he tallied a team-high 24% Target Marketshare in Week 1. He managed just six receptions on only 7.73 yards per reception, but he’s going to catch a lot of balls from Jones this season.
Finally, James White is an intriguing option. While he doesn’t have a high ceiling, he has a super high floor. We know he’ll get a couple of touches in the backfield, and he snagged six receptions on seven targets in Week 1.
