Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks Matchup Preview (11/21/21)

This Sunday, November 21, at 4:25 EST, the NFC West Conference leaders, the Arizona Cardinals, battle out the underdog Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field in Seattle. The two teams were disappointed with a loss last week, so they’re both desperate for a win before it becomes a losing streak. The Cardinals have been floundering without their MVP contender, Quarterback Kyler Murray – who is still questionable going into this week. As if the Cardinals weren’t drawing enough already, their backup quarterback, Colt McCoy, is also questionable due to a pectoral strain. It is rumored he will recover and start Sunday’s match. If all else fails, can double backup quarterback Chris Streveler keep his team from crumbling to another underdog team?

Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks Betting Odds

Even though the 8-2 Arizona Cardinals are plagued with injuries this season, they still manage to have higher projected play than the 3-6 Seattle Seahawks. With their franchise quarterback still on the sideline, the Cardinals have to put their trust in backup Colt McCoy. The spread believes McCoy can help bring the Cardinals another victory with a spread of -2.5 and the Seahawks with a +2.5. The money line places Arizona with -142 and Seattle +120. This game is projected to be relatively close in score and can lead to an unpredictable finish. I am not confident in the spread to encourage big bets on this game simply because both quarterbacks are coming off of an injury and could potentially get hurt again during the game, causing inconsistent play.

The Seahawks also have a record of 4-8 against the spread in their last 12 games against NFC West opponents. It may leave the match up to feel sporadic.

However, the Cardinals are 5-2 against the spread in the last seven games against the Seahawks. Guess we will have to see which way the streaks will continue.

My prediction: Cardinals win, 28-24—confidence level 60%.

Arizona Cardinals Analysis

The Arizona Cardinals started their season off with an impressive 7-0 record, making them the only team undefeated past Week 6. Kyler Murray was leading his team to extensive victories and averaging over 284 passing yards per game. However, the tide began to turn in Week 8 when Murray went down with an ankle injury trying to scramble for a first down conversion. Colt McCoy has stepped in as a placeholder for the starter and has not performed at the same standard. McCoy gave the Cardinals their second loss against the Carolina Panthers and threw for only 107 yards. They ultimately lost the game 34-10 and left fans begging for Murray to return.

McCoy has been in the league for ten years and has been picked up by five teams, including the Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers, the Washington Football Team, the New York Giants, and finally landed in Arizona. He is going to have to play cautious and trust his slant routes with receivers AJ Green and Christian Kirk. He also should take advantage of his aggressive running back, James Conner, in order to rush downfield.

Kyler isn’t the only star player out for injuries that have significantly affected the team’s performance. DeAndre Hopkins also went down in Week 8 against the Packers. Hopkins has been known for his crucial catches and intense compatibility with Murray, and the two make a fiery pair. From slant routes to hail mary’s, Hopkins and Murray have been an unbeatable combination that leads to Top 10 plays of the week.

With the two biggest stars on the team unable to step on the field, the Cardinals will have to get creative in their play calling to combat a hungry Seattle defense.

There will be a shift in defensive strategy for this match-up since star left defensive tackle JJ Watt is still on the Injured Reserve list going into Week 11 from a shoulder injury he sustained back in Week 5. Watt provides the primary source of pressure for the Arizona defense, but replacement Jordan Phillips has been sufficient at the job.

The Cardinals have been plagued with injuries these past few weeks, leaving them at a physical and moral disadvantage walking into this week. Hopefully, they will be able to improve and stick to the basics to enhance their chances of winning this week.

Seattle Seahawks Analysis

The Seattle Seahawks are looking to take their first win against a team in the conference. Entering Week 11, they’re coming in ranked last in the NFC West and are desperately trying to dig themselves out of their hole. The team has flipped back and forth between Quarterbacks Russel Wilson and Geno Smith due to a badly ruptured tendon in the middle finger of his throwing arm. Wilson has been relatively disappointing this season with a lack of throwing and rushing yards on the season. He has only acquired 1,357 passing yards and 100 rushing yards which isn’t compared to other top quarterbacks in the league.

However, leading wide receiver, DK Metcalf has been giving intentional and impressive performances this season. He has 606 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. If Metcalf can create separation from the top defensive Cardinals, there is great potential for explosive plays.

The Seahawks will also be forced to depend on second-leading receiver Tyler Lockett to remain unpredictable. The Cardinals’ defense is going to be focused on making up for the prosaic, backup-filled offense, which will motivate them to stay at their peak performances. The defense averaged 4.9 yards a play against the Carolina Panthers, which leaves significant room for the Seahawks to take advantage of. There will need to be a considerable variety of rushing and passing plays along with rotating receivers to keep the defense guessing.

Cornerback Bryon Murphy Jr. is going to have to be patient and agile when protecting the field against Kirk and Green. With three interceptions so far this season, Murphy Jr. has been proving himself to be a critical function of the Seahawks’ defense. If the Seahawks are looking to pull out a win against the playoff projected Cardinals, they’re going to look to Murphy Jr. to make critical plays.

Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks Daily Fantasy Picks

Like many fantasy players who drafted Kyler Murray in the first round, I am very disappointed to see he is not returning this week. Having Murray off the field leaves a massive hole on the teams. DeAndre Hopkins is also out, leaving the two top-scoring fantasy players on the Cardinals unavailable. Christian Kirk is next in line for projected points with 10.6, but I do not believe Colt McCoy will feel confident enough to throw the ball downfield to receive yards.

On the Seahawks, Russell Wilson might be a good option for a quarterback with a projection of 16.9 points. He’s facing the Cardinals defense, which allowed almost 5 yards a play last game, which can be very beneficial in a close game.

Overall, no notable standouts in fantasy will be found in this game. The options are subpar at best.
