Carolina Panthers vs. Miami Dolphins Matchup Preview (11/28/21)

This Sunday, the 5-6 Carolina Panthers head down the coast to Miami to take on the 4-7 Miami Dolphins. This will be an interesting matchup given that the Panthers are the more talented team, but are coming off a loss to the Washington Football Team. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are hot, on a three-game winning streak that included a take down of the Texans and the Jets, but also an upset of the Ravens. Cam Newton made his homecoming debut in Carolina last week and played well, but it has been the Carolina defense that has kept them in the running for a playoff spot. This isn’t something that the Dolphins have been able to say, but in these last three games, their defense has really showed up.

Carolina Panthers vs. Miami Dolphins Betting Odds

This matchup has an over/under set at 42 and the Panthers are the favored team, which is not surprising. But it is expected to be a close game, as they are only favored by 1.5 points. If the line moves in favor of the Panthers throughout this week, the Panthers have covered the spread two out of five times when they are at least the 2-point favored team, while the Dolphins are 4-2-1 against the spread when they are playing as at least the 2-point underdog. The Panthers are 5-6 against the spread this season and have hit the over four times in their eleven games. The Dolphins have also hit the over four times in eleven contests and are 5-5-1 against the spread. My prediction: Panthers win 24-17, Panthers cover, under 42

Carolina Panthers Analysis

For most of this season, it has been Carolina’s outstanding defense that has kept them in playoff contention, but last week against the Washington Football team, their usual solid defense looked slow, and their errors ultimately cost them the game. This defense is ranked second across the league in yards against them per game allowing just 288.7 yards, but last week gave up 369 to the Washington offense, 190 of which were rushing yards. Across Carolina’s five wins this season, they have given up an average of just 56.4 rushing yards per game, but across their six losses, they have given up an average of 163 rushing yards per game. It is clear that when their defense shows up, it carries them. This defense has 30 sacks on the season, one behind the league-leader and 10.5 of which came from Haason Reddick alone. Brain Burns has also been a catalyst in this with 7 sacks on the season.

Cam Newton looked good in his debut in Carolina, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for one. He totaled 235 yards, completing 21/27 passes, proving that despite what many people think, he’s still got it. He will likely look to get the ball to DJ Moore or McCaffrey, who have been the two favored targets this year. Moore has been quiet these last couple of games and has trailed Christian McCaffrey in receiving yards, but against a pass defense that allows so many yards like Miami does, he may put numbers on the board. With that being said, Miami’s secondary has picked it up a lot in the last few games, so they may cause issues for Moore, who has 751 yards on the season thus far. Meanwhile Christian McCaffrey continues to be an offensive threat for the Panthers with 407 rushing yards and 343 receiving yards in six games. The Dolphins have done a decent job at shutting off the run game this season averaging just 108.6 yards against them per game, but McCaffrey will undoubtedly threaten that. Regardless of their offensive performance, we have seen that if the Carolina defense doesn’t show, it doesn’t really matter what the offense can do.

Miami Dolphins Analysis

The Dolphins are on a three-game winning streak which includes a huge upset over the Ravens, and this momentum will probably be their biggest leg up on Carolina. Their defense has struggled all season, but have shown up and buried teams over the last three games. They have had 10 sacks over the last three games, a huge jump from the 3 sacks they had over the three games before that. They were also able to contain Lamar Jackson to 39 rushing yards, his second-lowest of the season. Their rush defense outperforms Carolina on average, having only allowed 108.6 rushing yards per game, which is among the top 15 teams in the league. Still, they are last in the league in passing yards against them with 3,016 in total. The Newton-Moore combination will likely threaten this so the Dolphins cannot let their defensive consistency that they have developed as of late to drop if they want to win this game. This consistency in large part lands on the shoulders of free safety Jevon Holland and outside linebacker Jaelen Phillips who have proved their worth in the last few games.

Offensively they have Tua Tagovailoa back who threw for 273 yards and looked solid last week alongside Myles Gaskin who had a season-high 89 rushing yards. The Carolina defense has not been overwhelmingly good at defending the run game this season, which might give Gaskin room to show off. Jaylen Waddle continues to be a safe option for the Dolphins with 622 receiving yards this season, however this may not be as safe of an option this week as the Carolina defense is first in league in passing yards against per game, holding teams to just 174.2 yards. This is in large part due to the solid performance of Jeremy Chinn who has tallied 71 tackles for Carolina this year.

Carolina Panthers vs. Miami Dolphins Daily Fantasy Picks

Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey is the best pick of this week. He has been performing extremely well since his return and I think the Miami defense will struggle to contain him given his versatility. Across just 6 games he has 407 rushing yards but has also proved that he can catch the ball with 343 receiving yards. He is projected to have 22.13 fantasy points this week.
