Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams Matchup Preview (10/24/21)

We’ve got a massive revenge game this Sunday afternoon, as Jared Goff and Matt Stafford prepare to battle their old clubs.

It’s uncertain if there’s animosity between either club or player, and it’s also uncertain if this game will be competitive. Following Detroit’s embarrassing defeat last week, the Rams have opened as 15.5-point favorites.

Considering the Rams shredded a shorthanded Giants team last week, this line seems about right. However, is there any value in taking L.A.? Or, should we back the Lions to be feisty and cover this big spread?

Let’s dive into this highly-anticipated Week 7 matchup.

Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams Betting Odds

The Rams offense is cruising, and they absolutely destroyed a banged-up Lions team last week.

This game should end up similar. The Lions have CB Jeff Okudah, RB D’Andre Swift, TE TJ Hockenson, and T Penei Sewell on the injury list. That group of guys cannot keep up with this loaded Rams offense.

The Lions already rank 26th in Football Outsiders Defense DVOA and 28th in EPA per play allowed. Both those stats are right in line with the Giants’ statistics.

Meanwhile, the Rams are a top-5 offense by almost every meaningful metric, and I’m expecting Stafford and Co. to put up 30+ points for the second-straight week.

As such, I’m recommending two bets on this game.

First, I’d bet the Rams team total over at 34.5 or better. Second, I’d take the Rams spread at -16.5 or better. I believe both provide value, as I’m very bullish on the Rams to post another blowout victory

My Predictions: Rams -15.5 (Play to -16.5), Rams TT o33.5 (Play to 34.5)

Detroit Lions Analysis

The Lions are frisky. Dan Campbell has this team playing hard.

However, the Lions are not good. From an efficiency standpoint, the Lions rank among the bottom-5 NFL teams in:

  • Offense DVOA
  • Defense DVOA
  • Offensive Success Rate
  • Defensive Success Rate
  • Points per game
  • Points allowed per game

As such, the Lions are 0-6. Plus, the Detroit schedule doesn’t get much easier, and it’s hard to see when they’ll get their first win. Following this Rams game, the Lions have:

  • Eagles at home
  • Bye Week
  • Steelers on the road
  • Browns on the road

It’s unfortunate, but Goff and the Lions could easily be 0-10 following that stretch.

Speaking of Goff — He hasn’t looked bad, but his efficiency stats aren’t excellent. He’s completing 66% of his passes, but for only 6.3 yards per attempt, and he grades out as PFF’s 30th-best quarterback. He’s made just six Big Time Throws to nine Turnover Worthy Plays, and he’s been particularly bad under pressure (50% completion, 5.9 YPA, 0 TDs, 5 INTs).

The defense is weak, but mostly in the secondary. Okudah hasn’t been good, but the Lions lack depth and talent at cornerback outside of him. Their next two cornerbacks (Amani Oruwariye, AJ Parker) have combined to allow 31 receptions on 40 targets (77.5% completion) for close to 15 yards per attempt.

Las Angeles Rams Analysis

The Rams are loaded at every position. But it’s best to focus on four in particular:

  • QB Matthew Stafford: Stafford currently leads all quarterbacks in QBR and EPA per play this season. He’s completing nearly 70% of his passes for almost 10 yards per attempt. While there were questions of how he’d fit into Sean McVay’s heavy play-action offense, he’s passed every test.
  • WR Cooper Kupp: Cupp continues to impress. He grades out as PFF’s third-best wide receiver, and he has caught 70% of his targets for over 14 yards per reception.
  • CB Jalen Ramsey: Ramsey has been questionable at times this season, but he’s still the anchor of a secondary that ranks fourth in Passing Defense DVOA. He’s also recorded four PBUs and an interception through six games.
  • DL Aaron Donald: Donald has been one of football’s best players for years, and he’s been no different this season. Donald grades out as PFF’s second-best defensive linemen, and he currently leads the NFL in quarterback hurries.

Between those four, the Rams have a top-5 playmaker at four of the most important positions in football. Add in an offensive line that ranks seventh in adjusted line yards and a rush game that ranks in the top half of the league in efficiency, and this is a team that’s almost impossible to stop.

Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams Daily Fantasy Picks

I’d look to Robert Woods in this game.

The Lions are incredibly unsteady at cornerback, and Woods has the talent needed to create mismatches and create big plays. He’s averaging over 12 yards per reception this season, and his usage has steadily increased in recent weeks.

Woods received 40% of the Rams Target Marketshare last week, and the Lions rank 24th in Pass Defense DVOA vs. #1 and #2 wide receivers. Detroit’s defense will likely focus on Kupp in this game, and you can cash in on Woods as a result, because he’s sure to be relatively cheap in DFS formats.
