Indianapolis Colts vs. Miami Dolphins Matchup Preview (10/3/21)
Ouch. The Miami Dolphins lost their starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, during the Week 2 beatdown they suffered from Buffalo. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts are dealing with numerous injuries of their own, from Carson Wentz and his two sprained ankles to rookie stud Kwity Paye and even star offensive lineman Quenton Nelson. Both of these teams have been rocked by injuries and tough losses against superior opponents. Miami recently lost in overtime to the Las Vegas Raiders on the road. That road victory would have made up for the destruction it suffered against the Bills, but unfortunately, the Dolphins dropped to 1-2. The Indianapolis Colts have it even worse right now as they have lost all three games through Week 3. Now, they have to travel to Miami to face the Dolphins on the road. If there is any consolation, they will at least face Miami without Tua under center. Jacoby Brissett will be starting for the Dolphins again in Week 4 after a solid performance against the Las Vegas Raiders. Brissett protected the ball, for the most part, and helped position the Dolphins to have a shot at winning the game. Brissett threw for 215 passing yards and ran for 37 yards and one touchdown. Ironically, Miami has played better on the road than at home this season; however, the sample size is still relatively small. Still, you must wonder if that will negate the usual “home field advantage” applied to most matchups for the home team. The Colts have so many injuries right now that it is hard to think they can overcome it. Additionally, they have a long way to go defensively before they can be competitive with most teams. The team chemistry is another thing to watch, as the Colts have struggled and could lead to a further spiraling effect.
Indianapolis Colts vs. Miami Dolphins Betting Odds
- The Facts:
The Miami Dolphins (-135) are slight moneyline favorites over the Indianapolis Colts (+115) at home. Currently, the spread has the Dolphins giving -1.5 points, while the Colts are getting 1.5 points. The point total is set at 43 points with -110 odds for both the over and the under.
- The Opinion:
This is an incredibly tough game to decide on simply because of the recent catalysts and injuries surrounding both teams. Neither team is particularly good, either. Indianapolis is fighting off several injuries to key players, and their availability could be a determining factor. For now, I like the Dolphins to win a narrow game simply because the Colts may not have several starters.
- My Predictions: Dolphins win 27-23, Dolphins cover -1.5 (-110)

Indianapolis Colts Analysis
Everyone knew that the Colts had an especially difficult front-end to their schedule, but going 0-3 through three weeks was certainly not in their plans. Unfortunately for Indianapolis, two of its three games have not been all that close either. Besides the game against the Los Angeles Rams at home, where the Colts lost 27-24, they have been losing by double-digits. They dropped one against the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 28-16 and another to the Tennessee Titans 25-16. There are so many issues with this Colts team right now; it is hard to pinpoint any particular area. They are 28th in opponent rushing yards per game, 24th in team points per game, and 26th in passing yards per game. Indianapolis can’t stop any offenses and can’t generate its own. The outlook for the Colts is becoming grim.

Miami Dolphins Analysis
Miami has been atrocious on offense through three games. The Dolphins could not put any points on the board against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2; however, they had a much better outing in Week 3 when they barely lost to the Las Vegas Raiders in overtime. In that game, they were able to score 28 points. That was the first game of the year that Jacoby Brissett started since Tua’s rib injury, so this may be a sign that Miami is trending upward. It is hard to imagine a lot changing, though, as the Dolphins are 30th in points per game and 29th in total yards per game. Defensively, they aren’t faring too much better. The Dolphins are 23rd in opponent points and 27th in rushing yards per game. If Miami can play similarly to how it played in Weeks 1 and 3 instead of Week 2, then it could still have a reasonably successful year. The Dolphins will try to turn it around against another struggling team in the Indianapolis Colts.

Indianapolis Colts vs. Miami Dolphins Daily Fantasy Picks
Carson Wentz holds the ball in the pocket a little too long; however, there is good news if you are a Colts fan. The Dolphins rank 27th in sack percentage so far this year, which will allow Wentz a bit more time than usual. Who does this benefit the most? The Colts receivers, of course. Michael Pittman Jr has emerged as the clear-cut No. 1 wide receiver for the Colts. Despite the terrible efficiency from the offensive line and quarterback, Pittman has proved he is talented and a valuable weapon. He should be looked for early and often throughout this game, likely reaching double-digit targets.
Another valuable DFS play is Jaylen Waddle. With Jacoby Brissett under center for a complete game, Waddle saw 13 targets come his way. That type of volume based on his value is substantial. Even though he only ended the game with 58 receiving yards, it is clear that Brissett likes to look for Waddle, and sometimes that alone is enough to be valuable in fantasy. Indianapolis and Las Vegas have similar secondaries regarding passing yards allowed through three games, so expect a repeat performance from Waddle this week. He has big-play potential, so a long touchdown is not out of the question either.
