Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans Matchup Preview (12/12/21)

In the week 14 the Jacksonville Jaguars go on the road to face their AFC South division rival the Tennessee Titans.  The 2-10 Jaguars are coming off a 30-point loss to the Rams in week 13; Jacksonville has lost 16 straight games vs. NFC teams, which is the longest active streak in the NFL.  The Titans at 8-4 had a bye in week 13, they last played in week 12 losing to the New England Patriots 36-13.  Tennessee is on a two-game losing streak, having scored 26 points combined in those games.  The Jaguars are averaging 14.6 points per game on the road this season.  The Titans are averaging 22.5 points per game at home in Music City this season.

In the 37-7 loss the Rams in week 13, Trevor Lawrence was 16-28 for 145 yards and 71.3 passer rating.   The rookie quarterback has the most sub-75 passer rating games in the NFL this season with eight.  His 33.7 QBR ranks him 28th in the league.  He’s had five games where he has not thrown a touchdown pass this campaign.  This season the number one draft pick in 2021 has thrown for 2,514 yards, nine touchdowns, 10 interceptions and is completing 57.1% of his passes.  Against AFC teams this season he has thrown for 1,526 yards, six touchdowns with a 56.8 completion percentage.

The Jaguars’ running attack is averaging 110.6 yards per game, ranking them 18th in the NFL.  James Robinson who leads the team in rushing with 678 yards and seven touchdowns, is battling knee/heel injuries and has been getting limited carries.

Tennessee Titans Analysis

In 2021, the Titans are averaging 354.2 yards of total offense per game, while scoring 25.3 points per game, ranking them 12th in the NFL.  The Titans have at least three giveaways in two straight games for the first since the end of the 2015 season.

In the loss to the Patriots in week 12, Ryan Tannehill was underwhelming completing only 11 passes for 93 yards, one touchdown and an interception. On the season, Tannehill has thrown for 2,774 yards, 14 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 65.8 completion percentage and an 84.7 quarterback rating.  He is 13th in the league with a QBR of 53.8.  The former Dolphin has been sacked 33 times through 12 games.

The Titans receivers are a group that hasn’t lived up to expectations this season, due to injuries and inconsistency.  Julio Jones, acquired in the off-season from Atlanta has played only six games due to injury.  On the season he has 21 receptions for 336 yards without a touchdown.  A.J. Brown is leading the team in receiving this season with 46 receptions for 615 yards with three touchdowns but is on injured reserve with a chest injury.  Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has started four games this season and has potential.  In the loss to New England in week 12, he averaged 12.5 yards a reception with a touchdown.  He has 25 receptions for 297 yards: averaging 11.9 yards a reception in 2021.

Since Derrick Henry was injured in week 8 the running game has struggled to be consistent.  Adrian Peterson was brought in to help but was cut after he rushed for 82 yards in three games.  In the loss to the Patriots in week 12, the team did have one of its most successful running games of the season.  The Titans had two players rush for at least 100 yards in a game for the first time since November 27, 2008.  Dontrell Hilliard had 12 rushes for 131 yards and one touchdown: averaging 10.9 yards per carry. D’Onta Foreman ran for 109 yards on 19 attempts: averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Tennessee has rushed for at least 200 yards in a game seven times since 2020.  Of active players on the team, Ryan Tannehill leads the Titans with 196 yards rushing; averaging 5.3 yards per carry.  Tennessee still has the fifth ranked rushing attack in the NFL, averaging 140.8 yards per game.

Defensively the Titans are allowing 354.1 total yards of offense to their opponents and allowing 24.2 points per game, ranking them 23rd in the league.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans Daily Fantasy Picks

The Jaguars have one of the five worst offenses in the NFL.  If you had to have one Jacksonville player in your lineup, running back Carlos Hyde would be the pick.  With James Robinson battling injury, I’d expect Hyde to get the bulk of the carries this week.  This season, the former Ohio State Buckeye has rushed for 251 yards on 71 carries.

This could be the game that helps Ryan Tannehill get back on track for the stretch run.  Dating back to 2019 the Titans quarterback has gone 4-0 against Jacksonville throwing for 907 yards and nine touchdowns.
